4 INCH 500 S&W ANYBODY OWN OR EVEN LIKE THEM?

My friend took his S&W 500 to the range for the first time and went through 20 rounds of 330gr. He was pretty cocky about it so he bought some 500gr and some 700gr grizzly loads for his next trip. He said the 500gr was tolerable...and then he shot the 700. He's still getting treatment for the tendon that he damaged in his thumb.
He's retired Army and owns well over 150 firearms. He's selling the revolver. 😆
Well I'll let you know how it goes with me this weekend l o l

I have gone thru hundreds of Smiths in over 55 plus years. And loved them all. In Old Age just down to My Dads 686 when he passed away in 1988 i said not going to sell it. I call it the poor boys Python. And still i wanted to add another revolver to it. And looked at the 4 inch 500 Smith last week. Probably ten years ago i sold one of the yellow cased{N.I.C.} Bear jobs. why I don't know should have just let it sit in safe.Anyhow got the bug for this T-Rex blaster. I know why another gun....Well because have not made my 2020 new gun hit yet. so want all the pro's

AND YEAH i can afford to buy whatever is out there. This one just hit a hot spot.RON K.

AND hope all you Smithees have a good 2020,Been out of the loop on Smiths with folding Glocks Ruger 57's and M-4's and stuff. Too many guns and never enough time.
Wow! I think a 4" 500 would be like my last, and absolutely FINAL Shingles shot! The first in the series didn't affect me much, but that second one knocked me down and sat on me for three days!

seabright: you need a set of these grips (available on Amazon) for your new 4" .500! Allows for a two handed hold! ;)

If you throw that,
will it come back? 😜

On a serious note, with the comp removed, what is the actual barrel length of the 4".'
Thx,

I can only imagine what your right hand (I assume you are right handed) will be like as you get older.
Well I am older. Have had the 500 many years now. I did have to take a break from shooting it when I broke my right wrist in a non gun related accident. Healed strong. Back to shooting. It’s all in the technique. I have no wrist issues from firing the 500 whatsoever

Picked up my 4 inch yesterdrmlyayHold on f , have some 700 grain monsters because if a rogue rhino gets loose with a silverback gorilla riding him followed by a grizzly bear accomplice ,im READY!!

Hold on firmly!

I thought I remembered this thread and sure enough, I posted in it almost 5 years ago
(Sept-2020). My first 500, a 4" with the 2 factory comps, for jacket and non-jacket, IIRC.
Here's pic with the blank comp the factory offered for the 460 but not the 500???
With some mods, it interchanges similar to the comps and I actually prefer it.
Not that it needs more recoil as the comps are noticeably effective, but I never liked the muzzle blast when comped.

I've done the same thing, but haven't shot the blank one yet.

I stopped after my .454 Casull. That was.enough recoil for me. Someone at the range let me fire his .475 Limbaugh. Didn't check the grain but it was pretty similar to a 350 gr out if my .454.

I bought a Performance Center with a 10.5" barrel used but got a really good deal on it. It's a Hoss! I sent it back to Smith and they replaced the barrel, shroud, ejector and frame under warranty. The previous owner must have shot it a lot! But the process was pretty simple as they emailed me a FedEx return label to direct ship to them. The call to Smith only took about 10 minutes and the turnaround was only about 4 or 5 weeks. Normally they could have direct shipped back to me (In Georgia) but since it had a new frame and serial number they had to ship it to my FFL to fill out a 4473. All at no cost to me including shipping and transfer fees. I'm an old man but recoil has never bothered me. I haven't shot it yet but I think I may need a spotter standing behind me or perhaps a seat belt or something. Just kidding. I don't think the 10.5" barrel which has a muzzle brake will be too bad. But I do need help holding it up it's heavy. Not kidding about that.

That setup shouldn't be too bad. But with artillery like that, you might have a forward observer help on the firing line?
Little off topic, so apologies for the drift. I can't help but wonder if S&W will intro their M1854 lever rifle in 500? Seems logical if engineers can make it fit.
I have an H&R SB2 (later version before switching to NEF) in 500 and really prefer a SxS but they're few and far between plus hi-$$$ when you do find them. Cheaper, but still not cheap are the BHA lever guns. Long guns in 500 S&W are probably somewhat like handguns but in even less demand?

You be better off carrying a LAWS rocket. Less recoil and more enjoyable to shoot.

Technique and stocks that fit your hand, are helpful.
Pics of a current project.
The OEM rubbers do not provide a high hand hold.
The whites do, and spread the recoil, plus are better for the weak hand hold, over the strong hand, for me, and hopefully others.
Less rotation with the hands up high.
Hope to have revolver stocks, available, this year. Fun project.
I have yellow and orange wood. 😎
This set is for a gloved hand.

Not ambidextrous, but work, if your strong hand, is being nibbled on by the Bear. 😵‍💫
