4 INCH 500 S&W ANYBODY OWN OR EVEN LIKE THEM?

Shot one a few years ago with loads that were about 90% of max.
Fired 4 shots and handed it back to the owner with one or two shells left, and told him I was done.

I could feel the concussion on my toes inside the heavy leather boots I was wearing with every shot.

Too much gun for me.

I guess i can get a wood & glass shadow box for it on the wall With a brass tag.

P.S. The gun is not for everybody and neither are these

I looked for grips today even tried finding the Hogue green grips found nothing and most all say screw thru the side how the heck you do that when the 500 has the bottom grip screw deal. And looking for wood custom found nobody that had anything. And nill grips i don't think the gal knew what i was asking her.RON K.

p.s. yet i see them with different grips on them all the time.

Ron,

Didn't someone post above that all grips that fit K frames will fit the 500 X frame?

If no one did, then I will. Stop asking for 500 grips, ask for K frame grips, and you'll find out why: "yet i see them with different grips on them all the time."

AS Hondo44 stated your 500 utilizes a standard K frame grip.

To remover the bottom screw configuration attachment from your 500 just push or pull the the small pin holding the clip that the screw enters, the pin is friction fit and should come out with little effort. Save the pin and clip so your rubber grip can be reinstalled in the future.

Nill grips work just fine and have pictured in this forum them on X-frames in the past.
460 S&W wood grips
Nill grips are available in with closed back and open back, the Nills I have all fit very well and tight.

Link to the closed back grip selection - chose K/L round but grip.

I do not own one but have shot at least 300 - 400 rounds through other's guns. After shooting all size barrel lengths and configurations I see no reason for me to ever buy one since I do not hunt large dangerous game (which is what I see the purpose of it for in the first place).

Expensive, loud, loads of recoil, and ammo (unless you reload) is big bucks!

Yea - it's fun to shoot for a few cylinders and then it becomes "work".

The great thing about shooting the
500s is down the road you'll be able
to explain to your doctor how you
damaged your wrist and elbow while
"having fun." :):):)

Hey could be worse... having to explain to a proctologist about damage caused by "having fun". lol

A friend's brother bought a 8 3/8" shortly after it came out... I fired it and decided if S&W ever came out with a holster size gun I would buy it.. When the 4" came out they were hard to come by but shortly thereafter there appeared a "used" one in a local store $100 less than the going price... The story was shorter than the one above but the outcome the same...new owner fired the gun once and sold it back to the shop...

After getting some brass, dies and deciding that 350 grain bullets would be all I ever would need, UNIQUE being an all-around powder was chosen for some target grade loads... 18.0 grains with a Berry's Plated 350 ran 1040 fps and was pleasant to shoot. 20.0 grain with the Hornady, Speer and Sierra jacketed bullets run 1240 fps. Recoil is not unpleasant...far more managable than shooting a 329/.44 magnum.

Only factory loads through the gun have been some Winchester 385 grain HPs... Some LEO friends wanted to try out the loads on some out of date Class IIIA body armor. It was strapped to a mannequin and the bullet went through both front and rear panels.....

Was in a large gunshop one day and there on the rack was a like new stainless TC Encore 20" Katahdin in 500 S&W...for $399.99...it has lived in my safe ever since...

350 grain bullets are all one needs for a good time...

Bob

Thanks to Mark for the grips Moolah in route. and pointers from everybody...Its fun to get something when you have had everything else.

And people like it. And i enjoy it. Sure they are way over the top handguns... That is what Life and fun are all about. RON K.

Well been over a year since this was posted hopefully we still have everybody still with us.Did convince a buddy to get one he bought the 4 inch. And went over to local sportmans today the 500 cabinet {which they had five on display last month}including a Perf. Center one was empty. I asked the manager and she said Ron all sold out in last month. And we can't seem to get anymore in quickly. And she said no more ammo for them so far.
So i guess now the 1911 and Sig and Glock guys are going to hand cannons to satisfy the urge.RON K.

I have a 4" 500 and I load most of my ammo.
Use Berry's 350 grain bullet over Trail Boss and you can shoot it with one hand. I loaded Hornady 500 grain bullets with H110 and you should see how high and far this load kicks a bowling pin.
Great gun to have on your belt in Alaska when you are fishing.

I bet those 500 grainers felt nice with full-throttle H110. I tried to squeeze them with SR 4759 but couldn't get over 32.5 gr to fit.

What type of die fitting did you use to seat those HRNDY 500 XTP's? I had trouble deforming the SFP with the RCBS die and had to use the Lee .

Have an 8 3/8" and a 4" 500 Magnum. Went out this past Sunday and shot a bowling ball with the 4" and the 440gr. Lee LFPGC ahead of a good dose of Win. 296. Big chunks of the bowling ball would fly 20 feet into the air and the ball would be forcefully moved. My friend Dean used my Ruger Redhawk 44 mag loaded with Elmer Keith's bullet and 22.0 grs of 2400. The remaining 1/2 of the ball broke in half with the first shot, but did not really move much when he emptied the rest of the cylinder at it. My last 500 blew apart the last piece and sent it flying.

Impressive power, it has.

I bought my M500 w/ 8-3/8 bbl. not long after they were introduced. Haven't shot it much, seemed like $1.50 a round was a little expensive for plinking.
