Aircraft pictures from Twitter/X

My father was a Navigator in a B-58 Hustler, so obviously, it is my favorite aircraft. I believe it looks awesome, and looked fast even when sitting still! In 1967, we were living on Bunker Hill AFB (now Grissom AFB) in Indiana. On a training mission over Texas, his plane was disabled and the crew had to bail out. Unfortunately, the parachute on my father's escape capsule didn't open. I was six and my brother was three. If you ever make it to the Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio, they have a B-58 Hustler, as well as, an escape capsule to view. I went about 30 years ago and it was a very emotional experience seeing the display. The plane ended up being very expensive and difficult to maintain, and had what the Air Force deemed too many accidents. It was taken out of service after a rather short period of time. Here is a picture of the plane.

I'm sorry about your father, but B-58s are just too cool not to post pictures of. They are truly works of art and engineering despite their dangerous flaws. If anything it an homage to the brave crews who took them to the air.

More photos from the USAF Museum, Dayton. Slower, early flyers from WWI and the birth of aviation…..

My dad worked on these at Minot AFB in the late 60's. Not a fighter. Designed to get off the ground in the US, fly at high speed as far north as it could before intercepting/shooting down Russian bombers attempting to drop nuclear bombs on the US.

In 1959 they sent two of them to Edwards AFB to set a new speed record. They prepared one (no idea what the special preps were) and right before the attempt it had issues. So the pilot jumped into the back up they had not specially prepared and set a new single jet engine speed record. That was in 1959. That record stands unbroken to this day. F 106. Made by Convair. Hard to believe no one has made a faster single engine jet (fighter or interceptor) since the 1950's.

This is a picture of the record setting plane.

Another picture just to get a better idea of what they looked like. These are from Minot AFB. Some of the planes dad worked on. See Mt. Rushmore down in the lower right of the picture.

By chance one is traveling South on I-95 through Savannah be Sure to visit the Mighty 8th USAAF museum a block off I-95. Cant miss it as there is a B-47 next to the interstate. Plan on several hours if you stop. Good hotels and restaurants close. By chance you have time go downtown and eat at " The Pirates House" as its the Oldest building in Savannah and very good food.
