Smith 610 10mm magnum testing

I got my 4 inch 610 bored out for 10mm magnum. I loaded up some 200 and 225 grain Montana Bullet works gas checked hard cast bullets I had on hand. I messed up with my Garmin chrono and did not record the data for the 200 grain loads. But here is the data for the 225 loads

Federal magnum large pistol primers.

Started at 16 and worked up to 20 grains.



I lost the 16 and 16.3 grain readings because my Garmin chronograph deleted them because I had so many readings. Accuracy was off a bench at 25 yards. 3 shot groups

Why did you think it was a good idea to triple or quadruple space between lines?
 
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. That's the kind of accuracy I would expect to see out of any S&W revo with no mechanical problems.
 
Back in the day, I had Hamilton Bowen bore out a 5" 610 to 10mm Magnum. He even remarked the barrel.

I forget the load but it was approaching the 41 Magnum. Definitely had to use a heavy crimp, as bullet creep would occur under recoil.
 
Did you get much leading with those Montana Bullets?

I converted my 4" several years ago but only played around with 165 & 180gr loads before I got sidetracked with something else.

I like the 4" barrel (actually only 3-7/8") but the longer 6-1/2" would be better for max. velocity with the larger cartridge.

Thank you for that. I have a S&W 610 4" bbl also that I have converted to 10mm magnum. Here are the numbers I got with 200g Hornady xtp bullets. I used Winchester 296 ( same as h110), accurate lil'gun, and accurate TCM. I also have numbers for 200g factory double tap ammo which I thought was weak and about 200 fps slower than my hand loads.

24.4g w296 1.27 oal (a little hot)
4”revolver=1330fps

No issue with leading. They are hard cast with a gas check.

What do a tcm powder. Also what was double tap going you had 120. I assume 1200
 
Not getting much over the 10mm auto cartridge which is sad! But I'll continue to study.
Longshot is quite the performer for 10mm Auto and it should do well in the 10mm Magnum.

Longshot will not work very well for 10mm mag in my experience and will not give you much at all over regular 10mm. TCM has worked best for me and has been a little better than h110 and lil'gun. I'm still not satisfied with TCM and want to try some 4100/enforcer but everyone is out of it right now.

I did my own. I bought the reamer from Manson and did it in a mill, indicating in every hole with a tenth indicator. It came out great. I cut it for Starline brass which is 1.245 long. I use moon clips but it is cut precise and will locate accurately off the lip just fine and will work fine without moon clips. I want to build a precise fixture to help with speed repeatability. I have been a tool maker for 50 years and boring out a cylinder is not that hard if you have the equipment and know what you are doing.
 
If someone fixtures it correctly and then started from the opposite side from the broken end mill and went down close where the tip of the mill is you should be able to drive everything out from the drilled side. Another thing, carbide is very brittle. If you got rid of the plug that covers it, then sit the frame on dry ice for a bit before placing a pointed punch on it and tapping on it it might shatter. Super cooling will make it even m,ore brittle.
 
I had just never heard of TCM thought it was an abbreviation.
TCM is a good powder and is usually about $10 a pound less than H110 or little gun. I use it most for ruger 45 colt loads but it works well for other max effort magnum cartridges.
