I dont understand the furious responses I get from 9mm guys when I say I prefer power over capacity and the simplicity of a revolver. I get some angry responses when I say I carry 357 magnum primarily in 3 different sized revolvers , im also getting a combat magnum soon as I want to occasionally carry 44 magnum. My abilities and someone else's can be different but it always goes to some version of im trying to prove my manhood lol. I dont get it, my belief in wahts most likely to occur, how many attackers there will be ,how proficient I am with different firearms, how many shots ill get off, the importance of landing a devasting first shot even if its a little off, my ability to move tactically at 65 years old, the fact that I have my 20 pound dog on a leash 50 percent of the time im out and about and can shoot a 686 plus with one hand accurately, and more input into my brain as well tells me the best choice for me is power vs capacity. Do what you feel is best for you but its just as stupid for a 9mm fan boy to crap on my choice as it is for me to crap on his! Im not him.

Don't let the 'fine young experts' interfere with your personal preferences.
I would suggest that they have not been around long enough to have all the answers. Probably not long enough to know the questions, actually.
Don't fret...they will become genuine firearms folks in time. Or they won't.
Note that elder gun guys do not generally fault others for their choices.

"Before one can be old and wise, first, one must be young and stupid"

Comparison is the thief of joy.
Indeed idc what other people carry, if they are a law abiding citizen they should take advantage of their rights and find a firearm of their liking to protect themselves against bad guys ,what they choose isnt my buisness. I assume even if they choose the wrong way for themselves In the beggining that if they train, meet people at the range, puck the brains of the rso and other folks they will figure it out. I mean od rather have my shield plus 9mm than a 38 special revolver, some guys love the 38 special ,its none of my buisness lol

Probably because your emotional investment in .357 Magnum being 'powerful' makes you upset that chronograph data shows that your choice of Gold Dot 135 gr Short Barrel in a 1.9" J-frame is less powerful than 9mm +P loads from a 3.1" pistol.

I said that shooting a J-frame better is a valid reason to carry it over a small semi-auto, particularly if multiple offender robberies aren't common by you and you avoid stupid people in stupid places at stupid times.

I also said that .357 Magnum really starts to shine in barrel lengths above 3".

Just don't delude yourself into thinking that 5 rounds of 135 gr at 1000 fps is 'more powerful' than 124 gr at 1130 fps. I don't subscribe to the outdated idea that 'energy' is a primary wounding mechanism in handguns (tissue crushed/cut is), but that 135 gr doesn't exactly do anything magical in gel tests either.

If someone thinks that makes me young and stupid, hell, my retrograde opinion on .357 Magnum is that 158 gr loads are often better than the 125 gr that were all the rage in the 1970s and 80s because they tend to penetrate deeper. A decent amount of 125 gr JHP don't penetrate any deeper than the Winchester 115 gr Silvertip that was famously inadequate in the 1986 FBI Miami shootout. Turns out they knew a thing or two back in 1934 when .357 Magnum was designed.

Omg bro, the 135 grain was specifically made by speer for short barrels to expand and penetrate at low velocities using faster burning powder , the fact that you have to keep comparing 9mm 147 grain plus p to the deliberately weakened version of a 357 proves which round overall has more topping power. When its apples to apples I believe the Yankee marshall chart is pretty spot on.if you like 9mm have at it but the fact that you have to keep defending it when nobody's ****ting on it speaks volumes to what you know to be true and what you want to believe

Yeah, agree with "before you are old and wise you are young and stupid". Don't feel this is too disparaging to young folks but to me, getting some years behind you is important to making good decisions. Try to listen and learn. Did lotta stupid stuff when young with no experience to draw from. Try to pay attention but still do stupid stuff but not as much. Which firearm and caliber to use will never be definitive. Replied to thread today where poster said "99% of people here don't know what they are talking about". My reply was "thanks for clearing that up". Then put him on ignore. Am not the sharpest knife in the drawer but what a bold statement to make to members.

As a 9mm fan (also a 10mm fan, .357sig fan, and a .45acp fan) I certainly would never show anger at someone else's choice of carry.

As long as you are safe and proficient, who cares what someone else carries.

I will choose an auto 99/100 times. That doesn't make me right or wrong, its just what I like.

Never understood the anger over what other people like, eat, watch on tv, or carry.

I didn't chronograph any 147 gr, but I did chronograph HST standard pressure HST 124 gr, and that still had more muzzle energy than Speer's 135 gr Short Barrel .357 in their 1.9" test barrel data. In a 2.75" Model 66 or a 3" Model 60, the 135 gr probably compares more favorably.

Again, if you shoot the less powerful, lower capacity J-frame better, that's a very good reason to carry it. First to hit is a huge factor in shootings.

If size and weight considerations lead you to carry the alloy J-frame when you might not carry a heavier handgun, that's a valid reason to carry it.

Perhaps you think it's controversial or angry to say that .357 Magnum benefits a great deal from longer barrels, or that shooting a gun better is a valid reason to give up some capacity or power.

I don't.

It has been said that good decisions come from experience, and that experience comes from bad decisions.

Angry? Really? I've seen plenty of people willing to debate the issue, and argue adamantly for their beliefs. I have NEVER seen anyone actually get "angry" because someone else chose a different kind of firearm, in a different caliber, than they preferred.

I have always found, people who try to convince me they are right, are usually trying to convince themselves. It’s a manifestation of their insecurity.

I carry what I want to carry. If someone asks why, I will tell them why. If they don’t agree I couldn’t care less, why would I get angry and try to convince them?

Let them get upset. We know the truth. 😂

The semi auto guys can’t seem to grasp when they hit peak power the revolver guys are just getting started.
Ah see, that's hitting below the belt. Now the bottom feeders are angry.

As a revolver guy I'm angry that my case of 9mm is half the price of .38 spl. Which I'd like to buy more of.

Because modern 9mm does everything a revolver does and capacity is much more....If you worked armed security or LE, you wouldn't carry a .357 even if they allowed you.

Revolver are nice and I love them, but modern 9mm is unbelievably better than even 20 years ago....And FAR less expensive and FAR more rounds can be carried.

As a revolver guy I'm angry that my case of 9mm is half the price of .38 spl. Which I'd like to buy more of.
And therein lies much of the problem...MODERN 9mm ammo is so much better than .38, less than half the price and you can carry triple the amount with the reliability of a Model 10.

If revolvers were the greatest thing in modern inventions, police departments would still be carrying them.

I don't believe they get angry, but here's the thing...Why do you care??

I personally do not want to lug around a big chunky and bulgy revolver, but if you want to carry a Desert Eagle in 50 AE, I could care less.
And all Handgun cartridges are poor performers ballistically, with grain this and foot pound that and on and on.
Yet so many carry a pocket .380 because "It's better then a sharp stick"
I don't justify my choices to anyone.

OMG sometimes I carry ..... wait for it .... a Benchmade 3" folding knife and no firearm at all! I know a Ka-Bar penetrates much deeper and is higher capacity..... Then again I taught armed and unarmed combatives including edged weapons and a little folder will end a fight before you know it. A couple tendons here and there and the threat is eliminated. But I guess I should really carry a Katana.

Sometimes I carry a little .22 magnum NAA revolver in the little pocket in my jeans just for fun. When somebody says that's stupid I ask if I can shoot them in the face with it.

In uniform a Glock with 15/17 rounds and 3 spare mags. But for civilians going to the piggly wiggly a full battle load might be over the top. Not saying there is anything wrong with that.....

I prefer to carry my Model 52 with mild wadcutters. It's low capacity, slim, accurate and low powered.

I don't really, but the whole capacity/power thing is academic in the 99.6% of random statistical studies unless you are in a law enforcement role or purposely putting yourself in harms way.

Don’t bring up the topic of chili and beans.

People get wound up and confrontational about the silliest things.

There are a great many good things about the internet and discussion boards. There is also a tendency for it to make rational discussions challenging.

Insecurity, I presume. I've noticed that there are a lot of people who desperately wish to believe that their cartridge of choice is some sort of illusive, ideal, one-size-fits-all self-defense cartridge and therefore they become upset/offended if someone else expresses the belief that it is inadequate for their specific individual needs.

9x19 Parabellum is the most popular pistol cartridge worldwide at the moment, which many of its fans are quick to bring up and seem to believe indicates some form of objective superiority over all other pistol cartridges, so they have an unfortunate habit of becoming upset whenever someone expresses a desire to carry something more powerful.

I've witnessed arguments in which 9mm fans made such bold statements as "A 12 gauge slug is no more effective than a 9mm FMJ!" in the context of discussing potential wilderness defense cartridges.

Ok I have tho and so have others so idk what to tell you lol, look harder maybe?

Funny, just watched a video where Mas made the statement that "regardless of caliber, shot placement was the deciding factor", just sayin'.
That sounds great, what if a 9mm guy and a 44mag guy square off and both hit eachother 8n the shoulder in the same spot with the first shot, who's recovering faster to make follow up shots and who has only one shoulder and is on the ground crying LMFAO
