Round went off while using kinetic bullet puller

I broke two kinetic pullers breaking down 400+ .357 mag cartridges that had a good crimp. PITA Wish they were a little more rugged. I would use that tool again without hesitation.
(The loads were fine in cold weather, but the primers were getting severely flattened in warmer temperatures) Decided to disassemble rather than beat my gun unnecessarily.
Break the tight crimp on the bullet before pulling by first seating the bulleta little deeper in the case ... seating bullet 1/16" deeper will break the case crimp and make pulling so much easier ...

Very good advice regardless of bullet composition.
 
So, never say never, I guess. After almost 50 years of reloading, I just had a round go off in my kinetic bullet puller. I was breaking down "mistake rounds". You know, rounds with case bulges from tipped bullets, primers inserted sideways, that sort of thing. Did the.38 Specials and 9mms and then started of the .45 ACPs. It was taking too long to use the collet, so I got out the .45 ACP shell holder (which I've done before) to use instead of the collet. On round number three, smacked the bullet puller on the concrete and "Bang!". Luckily not hit or hurt (other than my ears are ringing a bit). Found the shell holder about 20 feet away, bullet was just laying there next to the handle. Anyways, here's a picture. The 200 grain LSWC is at the top of the picture. Anyway, I guess I won't use a shell holder anymore.

in the last 3 or 4 years I have taken apart around 5 to 10,000 45 acp's because of a double charge with bullseye, no problems, , might add I inprovised the connetic holder, ,I cut the boot off so the bullet goes all the way thru, the brass comes out easier an bullet goes all the way thru, , its faster, worked for me
 
I haven't bought a new puller in several years, but I do recall that the instructions say DON'T DO THAT!!

If I understand you right doesn't all the powder come out too and go all over the place?

That's a first for me. Whacking cartridges in a kinetic puller never made me feel all that comfortable. The RCBS collet puller is what I've used for years. Glad you didn't get hurt.
I feel the same about the kinetic pullers. I have used the single-stage press, cartridge in the shell holder, extend the ram upward, grip the bullet with channel-locks, lower the ram to pull the bullet. Yes, the bullet is ruined but no worries over unintentional discharge.

I'm another who uses that exact same puller with a shell holder.

FWIW, I always align the shell holder so the opening faces the handle. That way the shell snugs into the holder groove during the swing.

Seems to me that this would eliminate the shell moving in the holder.
 
I'm not sure I understand this correctly - do you allege that the striking inertia makes the primer back out? I've not seen this in decades of using an inertia puller.

As for a high primer that results from not seating a primer properly...surely you quickly run an index finger across every seated primer to make sure it's fully seated, right? There's no excuse for not doing that.

I'm saying if you have a high primer. And yes, there is no excuse for not checking....but if a person doesn't understand that this could happen they may not check.
 
I have read (yeah I know) that this can happen if a press shellholder is used in place of the 3-piece collet. I considered it hearsay or an "old wives tale" until I saw your post. I can't for the life of me figure out how a shellholder could fire the primer when the collet isn't much different. My only guess is slop in the shellholder allows the case to receive a mechanical shock and fire the primer. How that's different than a tight, collet-held case escapes me.

The collet is non ferrous. The shell holder is not. Static discharge?
 
I always use a glove, muffs, safety glasses and an "arms length" swing. Glad you're OK. If you do something long enough you'll see just about everything. I had the wire bead on a bicycle tire split the inner casing and pierce the tube a couple of years ago. I've been riding for 58 years. Never had seen that one. Live and learn, die and tell it to Jesus.
 
As I said before, don't 'wing it'. Use whatever tool you are using just as it comes from the factory and was designed to be used.

Drill the center of the shell holders you use out double size. Should prevent that happening again. Could have just been the impact too?
 
Wow. I have that same puller and lost the collets years ago. Been using shell holders for some time now.
There is never any need for that.

I wore out the collet on an RCBS puller (I don’t know how as I didn’t use it all that much), so contacted RCBS to buy a replacement collet. They insisted on sending one to me for free.

Contact the manufacturer of your puller and get new collets. You won’t be sorry.

Oh, and I smack mine against the top of an anvil. The harder the surface, the better. I didn’t want to risk hurting the concrete of my garage floor, and while hitting wood works too, it likely deforms and absorbs some of the impact which defeats the purpose of the puller.
 
Mike, good advice. When I still had a century-old 120-pound Trenton anvil, I used it as the bullet puller's striking surface with perfect satisfaction. I see Midway offers replacement collet sets for the Frankford Arsenal puller -- for $14!
 
I don't get all the conversation on this issue. The puller was used improperly, end of story. The learning moment involves don't use a shell holder in an impact remover. Makes perfect sense to me. There are times when an impact tool is required such as flush seated .38 wadcutters. If you don't use an impact tool on those how do you get the bullet out safely?

To say that you hear about one or even two incidents of a primer detonating in an impact remover and that you aren't going to use that type of puller ever again is crazy. If you or your neighbor has a car crash do you quit driving and take the bus or Uber from than on? The two best pieces of advise here are to only use the collet on an impact remover AND push the bullet rearwards just a tad before removal. We learned this long ago making custom match ammo for rifle use. Doing so makes removal much easier.

The sideways seated primer is strictly a phenomenon of my Dillon RL550B. The priming mechanism slides forward with a primer in the cup and if the action is a bit rough the primer can be jarred to a position where it is standing on edge or upside down. The sideways primer can actually be seated deep enough that the shellholder still rotates freely. It's not a common occurrence but it does happen occasionally. Frankly I'm amazed that these primers have not (yet) gone off while being crushed or deprimed. The XL650 has a much superior priming mechanism that has never produced a sideways seated primer for me.
If you've been reading reloading threads for more than 10 minutes one thing that comes to mind is the high numbers of complaints surrounding the D550 priming system. Flipped primers being one of the most common. :)

5 to 10,000 double charged cases? That's amazing to me.
Question: how do you know that a loaded cartridge contains a double charge, let alone 10,000?
Comment: never buy reloads from this guy.

^^ Not static! Doesn't work that way. Two metals, different or not, rubbed together don't create a static charge anywhere close to that of insulators. "static" means not moving as in an insulator. Metals are conductors; they dissipate or redistribute charge. Look up triboelectric charge to see how static is created.

I hate to drop a dime on myself, but I will just to prove a point. I am absolutely anal about throwing a double charge. Guess it's my OCD kicking in. What I have done a couple of times is skipped charging a case in my loading block. No excuse for it, but it has happened. So now what I do is charge all my cases before I put them in the press and physically look at them to make sure they are charged and to the approximate right amount. Slows me down a bit, but it works. Speed is fine, but accuracy is final. Someone famous said that once. A powder cop is priceless for me in my Hornady LNL.

I have been using these kinetic and an RCBS collet puller for 45 years. Never seen that happen. I will not use a kinetic puller on a dud primer round - too risky that the shock may make it go bang. I primarily only use it on lead or copper plate bullets as the collet pullers temd not to overcome crimps on lead bullets and just squish them. If I have a bad /dud primer reload or surplus round I cant use a collet puller on I just toss it in my home made steel smoker and let it go pop.
