Ever buy a gun for the caliber?

Yep, too many to list, but the most recent is a first year Colt Anaconda in 45 Colt (1993). No desire for a first gen anaconda, unless it’s chambered in 45 Colt. 😍

Another is an unfired Savage 99 in 358 Win.

Having always been a 9mm / 45acp guy with many 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Gen Smiths plus a plethora of 1911s, the 40SW picked my interest, and not wanting to drop a ton of money on a caliber that might end up mediocre, I bought a High Point 40… for $90 brand new… the caliber seemed to pack the punch of a 45 with the recoil of a 9… so I bought a High Point carbine in 40… a real tack driver with the same comparison to its 9 and 45 counterparts… actually the 40 seems to make greater gain in terminal energy from a carbine than the 9 or 45.
Finally I dropped about $400 on a 4006TSW and it is an awesome pistol. Absolutely no regrets, but 40 really does not justify in my mind the extra expense for ammo, so I still carry 9mm in a CSX-E.

I wanted a classic 9 mm auto so I also got a Beretta.
I wanted a .22LR revolver for cheap plinking so I got a Colt and Ruger (still need to add a S&W to that line up).
On the flip side, I wanted a Colt Python which happens to be .357 mag. So now subsequent revolvers are in the .38 spl/.357 mag family.
I haven’t pursued getting other calibers for the sake of having a different caliber.

I always wanted a 45 colt so I bought my Model 25-5 earlier in the year.
 
Yes. At the time of the first big ammo shortage back in 2008 driven by fears of new gun control legislation by newly elected Barack Obama, and supply chain disruptions, I could not find any .38, 357, or 9mm ammo on the shelves anywhere in my area. Even .22lr and .22wmr was impossible to find. However, my local Walmart had plenty of .40 S&W in all flavors on their shelves. That's when I decided it was time to buy a pistol chambered for the .40 S&W. I found a reasonably good deal on a used S&W M&P40 (1st Gen. naturally) at one of my local gun shops. It's always a good idea to diversify.
 
I was in my local cop shop and they had just received a like new P229 in .357Sig from a local evidence room. Only bought it because I wanted a .357Sig, and they offered me the gun for $300. I later sold it during one of the panics for $900. The money was nice, but I wish I kept the P229.

A few years later the same shop had cases of LE trade in .357Sig ammo for $200 a case. I bought a Glock 32 from them, and every case of .357Sig they had. Still have the Glock, but the ammo is all gone now.

I also bought a RIA .38 Super 1911 because I always wanted a .38 Super, and the gun was only $299 brand new. I don’t have the RIA anymore, but I’ve got three Colt .38 Supers.

One day my local gun shop took in a 3”624, with box, on consignment for $600. I bought it because I wanted a .44 Special and it was the first one I had seen in person. It being a 3” Lew Horton gun, and the insane price, was a bonus.

SIL bought 2 boxes of .357 Sig thinking .357 Magnum during the ammo drought, oops. Gave them to me. Found a deal on a P229 and a P239 both in .357 Sig. Found .40 S&W barrels for both, so now I stock that caliber too. Added 2 more calibers to the stable because of his oops.
 
I bought my Henry Golden Boy because I'm a loser and I wanted a .45-70 because I used it a lot in call of duty at the time. I bought my M&P40 2.0 because my dad turned me onto .40 and have since become addicted to Smith and Wessons and .40.
After accumulating many of the common calibers, I decided that I needed a .327 magnum, so I picked up a Ruger SP101. Almost every gun that I buy now is because of what its chambered in. I love buying guns in calibers that I don't already have.
 
Caliber is always a factor when I make a purchase but all a firearm has to do is catch my eye to entice me. That’s one reason I have ever only sold one firearm in nearly fifty years. I like them all. Some for their utilitarian aspects, some sentimental, and some for their shear beauty. At some point they will, hopefully, leave me before I leave them.
 
I purchased an AR-15 upper in 7.62x39 because I had a lot of ammo on hand for that caliber. But I already had excombloc guns in that chambering.
If I were looking for super duper long range gun or an elephant gun then I might purchased a gun for the caliber.
I might purchase a full size glock in .45 ACP because it can handle .45 +P loads in moderation for use on our local black bears. I have 40 glock which I consider the minimum for shooting a black bear.
 
Yes. Back a few decades I was looking for a full sized .40 and found a police trade-in 4006. Found with the all steel stainless pistol I could dance a 32 oz gator-ade bottle across the yard with a full magazine.

A good gun, but a glock maybe lighter and tells when using a bandoleer holster all day for me on the shoulder.
 
Absolutely! I bought my models 25-2, 25-5, and Beretta Cheetah .380 because of caliber. I already acquired the .44 special/magnum tooling for the model 24 I hope to find and I will forever keep my eyes peeled for the Dan Wesson .45 revolver that I need...

Yeah I'd go a step further and say that the primary thing was always the caliber and then what its use was and then other things like my latest purchase was " i want a 44 magnum , that I can carry, and steel" 69 combat magnum 2.75 inch on the way
 
Yep: Colt Combat Commander in .45acp, S&W Model 19 .357 Magnum, S&W Model 25 .45LC, S&W Model 29 .44 Magnum, S&W 645 .45acp....
 
Several years ago I lusted after a RIA "Baby Rock" double stack 3" 1911. Tho promised in 9mm, for a long while it came only in .45 while the bugs were worked out in the 9mm. I had sold my Para Ordnance P-10 .45 (as I didn't shoot it much due to arthritis) when RIA announced the BBR 3-10. Finally got a 9mm, but DANG that gun is heavy!!!
