1911: Obsolete?

I was at my LGS today doing the paperwork on a Colt 01911C and there was a young buck POC eyeing the gun up in the case.

I couldn’t understand half of what mushmouth was saying, but I made out “Glock 40” and a few other terms.

He made it a point to laugh when I told him about the gun I was purchasing. He said 1911s were obsolete and were “boomer pistols”.

I don’t know what that means and maybe that makes me a “boomer”? I don’t know.

But it got me thinking. Do you consider the 1911 to be an obsolete defensive sidearm? What about for police service?

Stupid kid. 1911's are about as obsolete as the .30-06 is for hunting. And while we're on the subject, I refuse to use the term '2011'. It's a double stack 1911!!

Good for you on the 1911 purchase. Congrats. Since I already have a couple, I recently picked up a Springfield Armory SA-35 Compact (4" barrel). Another great 'obsolete' pistol (re: Browning Hi-Power).

Not even close! If the 1911 is obsolete, then so is every wheelgun out there! Are there more modern options that may be a better choice depending on a variety of factors? Sure, but that hardly makes the 1911 obsolete. It still pokes big holes in things at more than arms length, and looks mighty fine doing it! :)

Young people always think they know it all… we were all their once. But what a mature man of class and experience has is: not taking it personal or serious.

Young buck will learn that a 1911 is the finest hand gun ever conceived. JMB’s masterpiece

the only company that can use the name “2011 is STi” and they are no longer in business (I know! , but Staccato is not the same as Old School hand fitted STi).

So.. Yes, Double Stack 1911 is the only name now

Obe Kaybe. Ole Mushmouth probably holds his Glock sideways and wears his pants below his butt cheeks or wears a track suit.

He is probably one of these ignorant fools that buys tacticool products recommended by other youngsters on Reddit. 1911’s are far from obsolete. They are still used in the services. Some cops still use them.

If I could only keep one handgun it would have to be my Colt 1911.

I only have three. A Colt Custom Shop 5 inch govt. with target sights, a Kimber Eclipse Pro 4 inch with night sights and a Kimber LW 5 inch.
 
That kid displays an ignorance that characterizes too many of his generation.

“Obsolete” is an uninformed and overused choice of word that says more about the person who uses it than what it is they’re labeling.
I feel sorry for all the people who look at every object like it has a built in expiry date. These folks have been suckered into a never ending cycle of repeatedly buying the same thing over and over again, simply because they can’t fix things nor are the manufacturers they choose to support willing to do likewise.

I wonder what he does for a living?
It would be ironic if he works in some sort of tech capacity, oblivious to the impending “obsolescence” of his area of employment.
I wonder, too, what kind of vehicle he drives? Probably some late model, software dependent car that’ll conk out a week after the warranty expires.
Then he’ll learn about “obsolete”!

Every part needed to keep a 1911 running is already inventoried in warehouses all over the country. Even if they stopped making 1911s or 1911 parts, I don’t think any of us will live long enough to see them being used up.

The 1911 design is fine as a basis for auto pistols but it is no longer preferred for a variety of reasons, among them its manual of arms. The world's police and military
no longer find it a good choice for general use. The few exceptions that may exist
prove nothing.

Other autos work as well and mostly better nowadays than the 1911. It's a decent defensive weapon but no longer outstanding as it was more than 100 years ago.

You like it (I do) but don't denigrate the newer designs while defending the 1911.
 
Dear Folks, for once I need to stick out my neck.

Please remember the saying "different strokes for different blokes", or "suum quique" in Latin.

The 1911 was, is and will be a great pistol. Point and basta - no two ways about it.

Something else is also true: certain situations might require something else. As you can see from my "name tag", I am from South Africa. The SAPS (South African Police Service) carried Walther P38's, M&P .38S&W etc, but switched to Beretta 92's for (amongst others) the simple reason "that more boolits is gooder." A double stack pistol gives an edge over a revolver or single stacker because one has more cartridges available. Up to this day SA police men on weekend patrols get shot at - in many cases on a regular base. A few years ago we had a policeman in our congregation who confirmed that one easily shoots out 20-30 rounds during an altercation. In this case, a 7- or 8-shot single stacker does not help.

If I were living in the US, I probably would have been carrying, or at least owned, a 1911 of some kind.
