Bad things happening in North Charleston...

There was a bunch in North Charleston at a park on North Carolina Avenue that were shooting guns for the 4th of July. There was problems with neighbors getting shot at with fireworks, people asked them to stop and just got harrassed and threatened. Neighbors living around there called the police and when they responded a crowd came out of the woodwork and attacked the police. Eventually the police got control. Involved were several juveniles and one adult. One weapon they had was a homemade spear.

If society were collapsed. The issue would have been dealt with immediately and ruthlessly.

The problem is we are straddling the fence. One side knows no boundaries. The other side is bound by society’s rules.

Crazy how fast things can spin out of control. At least in this instance the public supports the police.
 
Learn something new every day. I was unaware that a spear made "gunshot" sounds.
If the defenders of societies law and order won't or can't defend us due to resources or their hands are tied, then society will do it eventually. Lord have mercy on us all if/when that day arrives. Think French First Republic.
 
I had to show up for our town's 4th of July fireworks show. I'm a volunteer fireman and was manning a shovel to put out any spot fires that popped up during the show. The show went off great, and I did have to shovel a little bit of dirt onto pieces of fireworks that hit the ground. The only problem we had was that some idiot parked in front of the fire truck and made it hard for us to get it out of there after the show. There had been a rodeo earlier in the day, and then after the fireworks a dance. At least 1000 people showed up. Not one cop was there.

firetrucks need an easily deployable car-catcher that'll slide under a vehicle, lift and roll it over on its roof. oh ... and posters to the effect :

IN SERIOUS DAMAGE TO YOUR VEHICLE AND CONTENTS

Lives may depend upon a firetruck able to move.
 
One evening we responded to a hotel fire...they were having a big old time in the attached bar venue...It was packed.. anyway...when we got to the hydrant there was a stretch limo parked there...well we had to hook up to water so I told one of the guys to break a window open the doors and run a soft line through the limo...small fire in one of the rooms but we did pump some water...when the limo driver came out...he was celebrating too...he said oh S***. wanted us to get the hose and the water out of his limo..he became very Irate...hopping mad is what the cop called it... got arrested...limo got towed got a 1000 dollar fine driver got fired after getting out of jail and all we did was break 1 window to get the car open...my Lt wanted to break both windows....but I wouldn't let him...he was soooo much a truckie type of guy..truckies are the guys that break windows and cut holes in rooves etc...fun ol night...there was almost 400 people in the bar venue that only allowed 220...big party...big!!....we had to give the hotel a warning too...sometimes we even had fun working....LOL

During all the riots over the past few years, I've wondered why they don't break out the water canon!

Back when I was a kid in the 60's I've seen the canon used along with police dogs, tear gas, and hardwood batons. Seemed most effective.
 
It’s really very basic: Poor behavior requires consequences. Lack of consequences leads to escalating poor behavior. Doesn’t matter whether dealing with an animal or a human. Just the way it is.

It is better for everyone if poor behavior is dealt with quickly, nipped in the bud.
 
Prior generations. lax in parenting, created this civil disorder cancer, which has metastasized to the point where terminal behavior now exists and is untreatable. A portion of our society has taken advantage of this and proposes a total abandonment of law and order. If this is allowed to happen we will no longer live in a democracy.

Small correction, it's juveniles for law enforcement, but for the press it's the euphemism "teens" for rioters and other thug behavior.
As several said above, our society has been too lax too long, and that behavior needs immediate corrective consequences - pepper spray, baton to the shins, lots of arrests with substantial fines and appropriate sentences - spray graffiti, you scrub it off, break stuff, you pay to fix it, jail time, etc. - pour encourager les autres.

Takes too long for enough back to arrive to do that. First back up on scene could have easily stopped the beat down with a couple of shots.
We have gotten far too easy on rioters. I still think the NG did right at Kent State back in the 70s.
