I just picked up a second one as a spare (that's allowed, right?). Interesting observations vs the one I bought a year ago...

1. Sights are finally centered in their dovetails (yay!).
2. Thumb safety isn't nearly as stiff as the other one was (which has since loosened up).
3. Recoil spring cap was sticking out of the front of the slide, enough to leave a gap around it. Also it wasn't parallel to the slide face.

I also had issues where it didn't want to fully go into battery. I took a closer look at the recoil spring, determined the end cap wasn't pressed in all the way, and carefully squeezed it in my padded vise. Now the cap sits properly and looks just like my other one. I took it out yesterday afternoon and put 200 rounds of FMJ through it. Overall it worked great, but it still shot slightly to the left which could've been me. My older one (which I still haven't managed to adjust the sights on) shoots WAY to the left.

I also had a few times where it still didn't go all the way into battery. I just accepted that the OEM recoil spring assembly is garbage and have ordered the Galloway units for both of my pistols.
 
I ordered the Galloway RSA for mine and it made reassembly easier. The Galloway and the OEM RSAs both stick out of the front of the slide about the same length.
 
I know they stick out a little bit. The RSA on my new one stuck out so far you could stick your fingernail underneath the cap. I had no trouble pressing it in using my vise. It's a great pistol overall but I think most would agree the factory RSA isn't it's strong point.
 
I called S&W and had them send me a new recoil spring assembly, and I just got it today. Take a look at the box they shipped it in...

I almost thought someone had sent me an empty box until I found it inside the bubble wrap. Unfortunately the replacement RSA is actually worse than the original. The spring wants to pop out on both ends, it completely locked up my gun and I had a hell of a time getting it apart again. Time to go aftermarket...
 
Just be sure to put enough rounds through it with the Galloway installed to confirm reliability.

I tried the Galloway OEM model .It was easier to assemble but I had several failures to completely go into battery. Not a lot probably one every 100 rounds or so. But that was enough to make me go back to the original I have never had that happen with the original and hasn't happened since switching back.

They are well made and most have no issues. I just trust it more with an original installed.
 
The guide rod end cap is a pressed in knurled shaft (it should have been threaded). If it is sticking out that much it was not properly seated into the end of the guide rod tube. Manually pressing it in will most likely loosen it inside the guide rod. I’d be very concerned about it moving as the guide rod springs push against it. There has been one post on the end cap popping off the guide rod.

My factory guide rod measured 2.065” up to about 500+ rounds. I measure it after every range day. Last month I measured it after a range day at 603 rounds and it measured 0.066”.

I tried the Galloway guide rod and my slide would not go into full battery. I returned it. I have cut with a very small Dremel tool cut-off wheel both ends of the guide rod spring 3/8”. That fixed the end of the spring popping out from under the guide rod cap.

Looks like those Amazon packages where they put a magic marker into a box for a toaster oven. 🙄😂
 
I put the Galloway springs in and shot both pistols today without issues. Hopefully that's the end of it.
