Most of our adult life we have have enjoyed Eight o'clock Columbian Peaks ground coffee - shame on me I suppose! Recently the price on that product went up 45-50%. Mysteriously, the whole bean version stayed the same and I decided to buy an OXO conical coffee grinder and buy the whole bean version. After 3 coffee purchases (four 30 ounce bags per time), the grinder is paid for with the savings. :p I am not a tightwad but between us and the people who are always here we were going through almost 2 pounds a week. It took me 4 days to dial in the exact amount of scoops, how course the grinds should be and ratio of water but this morning I hit he jackpot! We now get rich coffee WITHOUT the bitterness. I can not stand "Starbucks - like" bitter coffee! I find the most course grind works best for what we like.

On a second note we also discovered the Plugra brand of butter a few weeks ago. It's a bit more expensive but it is really good and is actually real pure butter. It sounds French but is made in the USA. We had been using Kirkland butter andthat was just OK - not great. We had tried the Kerry's Irish Gold but I don't really care for it. This one seems to be excellent.

Thanks for the information, I'm going to give that Eight O'clock a try. I've been drinking Cafe Bustelo but have tired of it and am shopping around for a replacement.
 
One of the stores we frequent has bulk coffee with choices of roast and the country-area they come from. That and a grinder with a burr to control the texture of the product really does yield a custom cuppa coffee.
 
Lately been buying Hills Bros Dark Roast whole bean from Amazon. Good taste and recently really good price. Use it in a Nespresso machine and refill the pods myself.
 
Here's an FYI tidbit: If you're buying packs of "vacuum-packed" ground or whole bean coffee, you're buying stale coffee. Fresh coffee gives off gases, which is why some have that little plastic button on the bag. It's a vent to prevent excess pressure build up.

Those OXO burr grinders are very good despite being moderately priced. When my gf decided to get seriously into making lattes, I got one for her and she really liked it. She eventually moved it into her university office so she could make regular coffee there and bought a Baratza Virtuoso (like the one I have) for home. Unfortunately it went wonky and instead of returning it under warranty, she bought another OXO and it has been working perfectly. I was surprised by the Baratza failure as they have a very good reputation. I've had mine since January 2022 and it's never missed a beat.

Agreed on the price increases on "our drug of choice" :(
 
our Aerospace Engineer son has made it a quest to wring out the perfect cup of coffee.. he selects the beans and then weighs the beans, selects the grind, the water, the temperature and time... it is the best cup of coffee that I have ever had... but he live 5 hours away.. I just grind and run it thru Mr Coffee... a barbaric method, but it produces a decent cup of go juice in the morning.. I don't want to wake up and do math.. lol

It was held as part of the World of Coffee Brussels trade show.

The 2026 World Cup Tasters Championship crowned Le Quang Cuong of Vietnam as the champion, with Catherine Queiroz (Switzerland) as runner-up and Mehmet Sogan (USA) in third.

Nehmet Sogan runs the Memli Coffee Lab in San Marcos, Ca. and you can visit by reservation/appointment.
 
I don’t get the whole bean thing. I taste no difference. If anything it’s weaker and I like strong coffee. It’s just more work with no payoff to me. I’ll stick to PeeTs dark roast. If price goes up. I’ll just pay it.

This is the button, inside and out.

I grind enough for two days in my Cuisinart burr grinder. It works very well. My nephew, Brother Bear, is the best. I order. He roast and ships the same day. Freshest coffee you can buy. He has coffee from all over the world.IMG_2330.webpIMG_2329.webp
 
The button on the coffee bag is a one-way valve that allows carbon dioxide build up to be released while preventing oxygen from entering.
You want to squeeze the bag to release the CO2 gases, and reseal the bag with the least amount of O2 left behind to help preserve roasted bean freshness longer.

Basically the taste, texture and creaminess.

The coffee we buy has the pressufre relief button.
 
...we are also users of the whole bean 8 O'Clock Columbian (medium roast for us). I grind them as a part of my "going to bed routine" along with taking meds, checking doors, etc. The Technivorm brewer will have the water and ground coffee in the filter so whichever one of us is up first just pushes the start button. It will sure spoil you compared to any ground coffee.

Edited my spelling as Technivorm is the correct spelling.
We have the Moccamaster model and it has served us very well.

Interesting thread.

I use to grind my own beans. But, no longer drink enough to justify it.

A favorite ground coffee many years ago was Yuban. But as the video suggests, it isn’t the same coffee anymore.

Now my favorites are Peet’s and Gevalia.

Also became a fan of Plugra and Kerry Gold butters. Switched when Land-o-Lakes killed the Indian maiden and stole her land.
Glad I switched. Unquestionably better butter. And really isn’t that much more expensive. Local grocery frequently has it offered as a BOGO.
Only downside is now I tend to use it more often!
 
So no more dark roast? I'll try the light organic stuff and see if I like it. Bummed......

Well that is one coffee system I have not heard of yet. I'll check it out!

Yes - my Wife is the BOGO Queen - lol. We got ours on BOGO too.
 
Whole beans are great, if you've got a little time and patience. Aside from espresso & drip, they also work well in a simple French press with an easy, course, grind.

That channel looks like a lot of click-bait. Some or it may be right, no surprise with big mass-market brands, but after looking at all those GIANT LETTERED VIDEOS, it doesn't look like there's much left that's worth eating in a typical grocery store!
 
I used to drink a lot of coffee and brewed pots of it daily. I have cut down to a dozen or 15 cups a day. Whole beans are wonderful. I prefer a coarser grind and typical choose to cold brew my coffee. Cold brew has no bitterness either while drinking or after. I use about 1/2 cup of grounds per half gallon of water. Set it on the counter overnight, it is ready to strain in the morning.

I only occasionally have hot brewed coffee, usually after a meal in a restaurant. When I want hot coffee at home, I just warm up the cold brew.
