5 month battery from Walmart

The Walmart EverStart bought in 2/26 became a NEVERSTART this week (7/26).
Did not last Five full months.
Was in my John Deere D130.

Addressing question about date code.
It had the date code 2/26

It did have Six month Warranty so was able to exchange at no cost.

Conversation with the clerk was amazing Bravo Sierra - quoting some of his comments . . .

Our mower batteries do not last very long . . .
Not even a full summer season . . .
I have to change mine in the summer . . .
I only use because of my discount . . .

The only positive part of the "customer service" was the no cost exchange.

Some years back I took a car to Walmart for a battery replacement under the prorated part of the warranty and the monkey that did the replacement hooked it up backwards and blew out the alternator.

The service guy said that Walmart shop "techs" were just mechanic "wannabes".

That was the last time I went to Walmart for anything auto related.

Doesn't sound like Bravo Sierra to me. Sounds like honesty.

do you bother to look at the date code stamped on the battery before you bought it..... I've seen many that were already out of date sitting on the shelf ..... 😏
 
Long-ish article on car batteries- who makes what and the re-badging and distribution.

The last two (TWO!) DieHard batteries I bought lasted 2 and 3 DAYS, respectively. They ain't cheap.

Sounds like Walmart has a winner...
 
Lawn and garden batteries are pretty much all imported. Even if sold by one of the big manufacturers they are buying them from somewhere else. Mostly Vietnam.
 
Actually...Walmart batteries are highly rated...particularly their MAXX line. But I won't be buying any from them again.

Are any automotive/mower batteries made in the USA any more?
I recall that Obama shut down the last lead smelting plant in the US.

Deka — Best Hidden Gem

Every other brand on this list buys batteries from someone else and puts their name on it. Deka is the someone else. Made by East Penn Manufacturing out of Lyon Station, Pennsylvania — the world’s largest single-site battery manufacturing facility — Deka is what happens when the actual factory decides to sell direct. East Penn has been building batteries since 1946. They’re family-owned, still independent, and they produce flooded, AGM, Gel, and EFB batteries all under one roof. Most people have never heard of them. Most people have been using their batteries for years without knowing it.
 
East Penn makes great batteries in my experience. I’ve used them on my cruising sailboat and they have proven rugged enough internally to withstand several offshore ocean passages. They produce several house brand batteries, all they do is change the label, the cases and internal components are the same. If considering any brand battery it is worth while to perform an internet search to determine who actually made the battery.

Yes, automotive there are many. Styrten, Clarios, East Penn, Panasonic and maybe more.
The U sizes (lawn and garden) I think East Penn is the only one but I'm not sure if they still are or not. The imports are so cheap on that size it's a beat down segment of the business. Also the lower end traditional flooded lead acid auto sizes there are more imports showing up.
 
Most familiar retail brands (like DieHard, Duralast, EverStart, and Interstate) do not actually make their own batteries. Instead, they contract with these three massive domestic industrial producers: [1, 2]
    • Clarios (formerly Johnson Controls Power Solutions): The largest producer globally and domestically. They manufacture Optima, Delco, and private labels for AutoZone (Duralast), Walmart (EverStart), and Costco (Kirkland). [1, 2, 3, 4]
    • East Penn Manufacturing: A massive, family-owned U.S. operation known for its flagship Deka brand. They also produce premium and standard automotive batteries for various auto parts chains. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
    • Stryten Energy (formerly part of Exide Technologies): They focus on private-label manufacturing and heavy-duty automotive, marine, and military vehicle batteries.
 
For the last 11 years, I owned my craftsman riding mower. Every spring It’s time to change the oil. Lube everything Check the air filter and buy a new Walmart battery for the next mowing season

Have you investigated the fact that your mower may be draining the battery independently>
 
Except for one, all my Murray lawn tractor batteries have lasted 3-4 years. Most are whatever brand Sam's Club sells, Duralast, I think. I'd check the mower for a parasitic drain or poor charging.
 
I had battery drama this morning. I ordered an ETX16L from NAPA for my Fatboy online and got 20% off. Went pick it up and it was NOT the “L” . Terminals were reversed. They had one about 10 mi away at another location. No problem I’m halfway there so I’ll go get it. I get there and manufacture sticker says 8/24. I asked for a different battery but they only had one. Said I’m not paying $130 for a 2 yr old battery. They had one at another location about 10 mi away. They checked sticker 7/26. No problem I’m halfway there so I’ll go get it. 🤬
 
NAPA batteries are made by East Penn/Deka.
I’ve been in the automotive business for 53 years.
I’ve had less problems with East Penn.

On a different note, a customer of mine bought a battery from me, and we started talking about warranty on batteries.
He told me he bought a battery from one of the big parts stores.
It had a 2 year warranty
Two years to the day he bought it it went bad.
He took it back with his receipt for an exchange.
The store manager told him it was out of warranty.
Tha manager said that he bought those original battery at 10:00 AM but it was now 2:00 PM
4 hours past 2 years.
I’ve known him for 30 years and have no reason to doubt him.
 
I'm also a fan of Deka/East penn batteries.
I've sold many and bought a few.
That being said last time I had to replace my mower battery it was about a year old but out of warranty(Napa 6 mo. warranty). I bit the bullet and bought a new one. Then I checked the charging. Should be around 14 volts( or at least battery voltage+1) but was only 12.6 which is just battery voltage. Replaced the regulator with a $10 part from Amazon. 10 minute job. Now 14 volts. It's a 20 year old John Deere.

Make sure the charging system works. That's easy enough to do if you have a volt meter.
 
I had a little John Deere riding mower. Bought a Die Hard battery from Advance Auto Parts. It lasted 5 years, but I did keep it on a battery tender as soon as I pulled it in my shed.

I have a small Gravely zero turn I bought 2 years ago, it has some kinda tiny sealed battery. I also keep it on a tender.

I installed a battery cut-off switch on my JD riding mower, and I no longer have to replace the battery yearly.
 
I bought my car used last year, so I really know nothing about its history. My battery went dead over night twice recently. Two different places checked it and both said the battery was/is good. It has a date sticker 2/24, from AAA. I don't know where AAA gets their batteries. I have an appt. this week at the Ford dealer to check if something's up, or maybe just the terminals need cleaned better. I'll let them do that. I break those connectors too often.
Any idea where AAA gets their batteries.
Four hours past two years? I think he may have gotten smacked in the face by a younger jeffrefrig!
