Default New reloader powder question

I will apologize up front if this is a ridiculous question but after reading through the books, instructions and Internet I have not found the answer. I am a brand new to reloading and just got a Lee Classic Turret Press for Christmas. I have started with .45 ACP.

Ok as for my question I have read over and over not to mix powder. Well I was changing out the powder in my Lee Pro Auto Disk from Accurate #7 to Hodgdon Longshot. Well I completely emptied it out and brushed it off pretty good but after I filled it with the longshot I realized there was still little flakes of AA#7 stuck all over the dropper, especially on the bottom. So is this enough to be a problem? Also when changing from one powder to the next what is the best way to get the whole dropper completely clean before adding the next powder.

Thank-you everyone in advance for your help.

Joe

It doesnt sound.like.there's enough left to.hurt anything, but to be sure I'd brush the flakes.off as well as you can, then cycle the powder.measure 4 or 5 times and discard.that powder. You should be.good.to.go.then. If you have actuallymixed the powder, I'd get rid of it and start over.

When you are done loading. Turn the powder holder to off.

Now put a empty shell (with a spent primer) under the powder drop expander die and pull the press lever. Some powder will fall in the case. Take the case and dump it in the powder hopper, do this several times until nothing comes out.

Now unscrew the two brass knobs and remove the powder hopper place it over your jar of powder with the hole aligned over the jar mouth and turn the hopper on. The powder will fall into the original jar. Tap it a bit at the end to be sure it is all out.

You could also use a funnel and dump it from the top of the hopper.

Once you use it a few times it will be coated with graphite and no powder will stick due to static.

I would dump out the first 4-5 rounds you loaded which may have a mixture of powder just to be safe. Throw that powder out in the grass or bushes.

Another thing to keep in mind is only have one powder out at a time so you dont dump a hoper full of one kind of powder into a different powder container when youre done. Once they mix there's no seperating them. Did it once and realized it as I was pouring on the lawn it went.

Good that you caught it. I keep a piece of old fired brass handy for the purpose of making sure the measure is free of powder.

I run it into the expander/measure several times to make sure all's clear.

There's no such thing as being too careful.

With the Lee Classic Turret I simply put a funnel in my can(?) of powder, twist the turret out, pour the powder out of the measure and tap it on the funnel a couple of times. Everything falls right out.
This is presuming that you have been keeping an unused dryer sheet rolled up in your hopper to eliminate static electricity.

Why in the world would you put a dryer sheet in the hopper.?? Once it has been filled it is coated and there is no more static. If you take the powder hopper right off without clearing the drop tube you will still dump at lease 2 charges all over.

Wow everyone, thank you very much or all the great information. I took everyone's advice and discarded the powder and pulled the cartridges that I had reloaded with this powder. It was a pain but I learned a valuable lesson and will make sure to be more diligent when changing powders in the future. Thank you all again,

Joe
