Hi guys.

I've been reloading my .44 Mag using the 240gr lead "Keith" bullets from Missouri Bullets. I've been using 20.5gr of 2400 which should put me around 1250fps. This load leaves minimal leading, and is accurate enough for me.

I'm starting to load for my newly acquired .500 and would like to duplicate these results as closely as possible in the 500. Missouri Bullet sells a 400gr "crusher" which I have purchased.

Does anyone have any starting loads for a 400gr hard cast that will push it about the same velocity? I would prefer to stick with 2400 or H110, but if need be I will buy a new powder.

I've never pushed a 400gr slug that slow. I seriously doubt you'll do it with either of those powders either, especially H110.

May need to go with a slower powder like 4895 or perhaps someone has a load with Trailboss. It will be even slower but if you're looking for a light load?

I was hesitant to suggest a load for 4895 since I don't know what the profile of the bullet actually looks like. In any event he most likely won't get more than 46gr in the case anyway if it's a long shank bullet.

I'm not opposed to shooting the 400gr hard casts at a higher velocity than 1250fps, but I don't want to get leading. I've read that anything above 1250fps without a gas check is a no-no.

4895 wont be a problem since my garand 30-06 loads use the same powder.

Here is a picture of the bullet:

that looks like one hell of a hammer

I'm using a 350 grain bullet with 18 grains of Unique and getting 1250....started at 14.0 and just worked up to what I was looking for. This is from a 4".

H110 is for max loads only, it doesn't take to downloading.

You can try and download 2400 till you get a bunch of unburnt powder but I doubt you'll get down to 1250fps.

I recommend using Universal or Power Pistol powders and experimenting a little if you know what you're doing and have a chronograph.

I also bet those bullets can be pushed to 1400-1500fps and be fine. Buy gas checks in the future so your 500 can come into its own.....:)
