Default .32 S&W Long cast bullets

For those of you who cast for this caliber, just wondering what your favorite mold is, other than the 98 gr. WC that everyone uses? Anyone have a favorite SWC or other profile that they have found accurate? I have the Lee 90 gr. SWC tumble luber and it isn't the best around.
thanks,
Stu

stu-I don't do a lot of S&W Long, but enough. I generally run the RCBS 98K, (my mold is a 6-cavity custom based on that design) in my .32 H&R's. I load quite a few Long's as well, but I don't know if that bullet will fit in a .32 Long cylinder. The only other .32 Long loading I do is for a buddy who has an Olympic free-pistol, those get the Lapua HBWC. PM me if you want a nose to crimp measurement on that bullet.

Stu,

When I only had one mould for my 32s, I got the one I thought would be the most useful, the Ideal 3118 (now Lyman 311008.) Although originally designed for the 32-20, it works quite well in the 32 S&W Long chamberings as well. I used it quite a bit in my old pre-War 32 Regulation Police and was always pleased with the results. I have a couple of bigger ones now, such as my Project 616 and a M&P 32-20, so I save the little frames from wear and tear with little 95-100 grain WCs and SWCs, but if I did only have one mould for them all...

I have shot the RCBS 98 SWC and like it a lot. I have also tried 3118, Lee's rifle 30-113 fp with the gc removed and the 90 tl Lee. Try the 90 gr that you have over 2.5 gr red dot and check your groups.

I use the modernized 3118 with a gas check mould for 32-20, 30 Carbine, 7.62x39, 30-30, 308 & others. Without the GC I use it for 32 Long, it duplicates the Colt 32 new police loading. I bought a couple thousand 93 grain RN and use them in 32 Long and 30 Mauser and 32ACP. The Hornady 90 grain SWC is a good bullet also. I was given a few hundred Lee SWC 90's that were tumble lubed my guns didn't shoot them well. The old loading over Unique and over WW231 both have served me very well. Small rifles in 32 long are few and far between, but are good for rats and groundhogs out to 100 yards and are low noise. Enjoy! Ivan

Interesting that some of you folks cast into .312 molds (311008). On all four of my .32's, none newer than about 1960, the tightest cylinder throat I have is .3135 and run all the way up to .3145. That .312 would just wobble on by with a by your leave. I suppose I should have been a bit more specific.

I have shot a lot of the Hornady bulk 90 grn LSW sized .314 in all my .32s with good results. For cast, I have probably shot more of the Lee 2r 102 LRN than anything else (also sized .314). I recently picked up the Lee 90 grn LSW mold but have not tried those yet.

I sent Tom at Accurate molds a RCBS 98 gr SWC and asked him to make me a copy of it in a 3 cavity.

Accurate Molds: Custom Bullet Molds

I have been very happy with it, I had him cut mine at .314.

J35, I like the looks of that bullet. Are you getting anywhere near the accuracy that seems to be inherent in the wadcutters in this caliber?
thanks,
Stu

Yes, it shoots good, no complaints.

The RCBS 98 SWC has been around for many years, it's a well proven design.

I will warn you that casting and buying molds is pretty addictive

I enjoy casting and reloading for their own sake.

I read somewhere that "It is a truism that reloader's who cast their own bullet's have the most fun."

Good luck ----- J

J35,
While I have been reloading since I was a kid in the 50's, I never cast a bullet until about 2 months ago. Since, I have accumulated hundreds of pounds of wheel weights, several molds, a pot and have been casting like a demon. I'm hooked to say the least. I bought bullets from Magnus for years but I've learned. I truly agree that those who cast have the most fun. Molds, a melt pot and a chronograph, what more could a man ask for.

I have great luck with Lee's 100 grain roundnose. I just tumble lube it and don't resize. In spite of this crude treatment it shoots great in my 32 S&W, 32-32 and 32 H&R. The target below is out of a 3 inch model 31-1 at 25 yards. It does about the same in my Hand Ejector and significantly better in my Ruger Single Six.

I've had the same results, too lazy to cast this little bullet.
