Just wondering if you would have any idea when a 5 pound can of Hercules 2400 was manufactured. It is marked "2400 LOT 297 NET 5 LB" This can is still sealed.

If it smells like a burnt out muffler bearing shoot it. If it is not clumped it should be ok for plinking .

What is a muffler bearing?

I think, but I may be wrong, Alliant bought Hercules in 1995 so it doesn't have to be very old powder just because it's a Hercules can.

a muffler bearing connects to the cannoter valve in most transmissions that i rebuild, so i can buy food, lights and reloading components, ect...ect...but mostly reloading stuff

Sort of like a "bucket of steam" that I had to find when I went on my first Boy Scout camping trip.

Also had the "snipe" hunt too. Walking through the woods with a large paper bag, yelling, "here snipe", "here snipe".

If that seal has held on this long...............I would say you are good to go.
Thats got to be some "Prime Powder", before they started changing things.

I'm still loading and shooting powder and primers that I bought in 1990. If you keep it dry and the cap on, it lasts a very long time. Moisture is your biggest enemy (other than the liberals). Heat can effect it but I've kept stuff in the garage for all those years and it gets above 100 in the summer and I have never had any problems.

I have a 5 lb. can of 2400 that was gave to me some time ago. It is lot number 235. I load from it from time to time and it goes bang. I don't know how old it is but the address on the label say "Wilmington 99, Delaware"
