Well, since I have a mod 686 6" L frame magnum, I figured I would test out the slow IMR 4227 in some mag and 38 cases, none of the loads were shot out of a 38 spl revolver, just my magnum .

38 spl case, cci500 ,fac oal,medium crimps.
Suter 158 Lswc oal 1.48
9.7gr 840fps 15,700cup c/o Dupont data
11.0gr 888fps ...............
Hornady 125 xtp oal 1.44
10.8 930fps 16,000cup c/o Dupont data
14.0c 945fps ................

357 mag cases
Hornady 125gr xtp oal 1.59
18.5c 1325fps 34500cup c/o Dupont data
18.5c 1230fps ...............
Speer 158 Jhp oal 1.58
15.3c 1075fps 36,000cup c/o Dupont data
15.3c 1082fps cci550 mag primer.................FINALLY,but still a target load with the new approved pressers of today.

Just think there "Might" be a better powder out there for 38 and 357 mag loads, with these smaller size cases, and the smaller bullets. Thought it might help if you were thinking of trying it..................

Good shooting.

For .38 Special, Unique. For .357 Magnum, 2400. There are others which will do as well, none better however.

I do not follow what you are saying?

Hodgdon online lists a much higher max charge for the 125 XTP resulting in more FPS in the magnum cases??

For optimum performance, yes, 4227 powder is too slow for 357. Now for 500 S&W Mag and such, 4227 is the cat's meow.
