Hey everybody, got another question for you. I'm loading for my .41 magnum and I've noticed that my powder measure doesn't really throw Unique very well. Probably because the powder is flaky, but I was just wondering if there was a powder that worked well for the .41 that's round(ish) enough to meter well in a measure.

How much variation are you seeing? Are you loading near max for Unique?

I use Unique for plinking loads, 9.7 grains, well below max, so I'm not too concerned about a little variation. For magnum loads, I use W296 or 'Lil Gun near max, so I am more concerned about metering/variation. W296 (same as 110) meters very well but isn't recommended for plinking loads. It's been a while since I loaded 'Lil Gun so I don't recall how it meters.

I know it's not very popular but Accurate #9 flows like water through my Uniflow. It is a bit slower than Blue Dot and a bit faster than 2400 IIRC.

The Accurate line of powders all have excellent metering characteristics.

Are you loading lead or jacketed? What velocity are your trying to load for? After establishing what I am trying to load to, I pick my powder. H110 is a fine powder that meters extremely well, but it works best with magnum primers and the range of starting to max loads is really narrow. I like 2400 for a lower velocity range than H110 is good for.

How well a powder meters is 3'rd or 4'th down the list to using the best powder for the load. Your experience may vary, but some powders work well, others not so well. Metering isn't a primary selection criteria.

I'm loading 5.5 - 7.5gr of Titegroup depending on weather I'm shooting paper or pins. Very consistent loads with standard Winchester primers.

If you like Unique, you'll love Hodgdon Universal.

Universal is near identical in burn rate and application. It meters much better and burns very efficiently.

H110/W296 for magnum performnce.

Large flake powders are known for inconsistant flow thru most powder measures. The trick is to get a consistant 'tap' against top & bottom stops when ya raise and lower the PM lever.

Ball and small flake powders work best.

W-296/H-110 and 2400 are good for full power loads , but DO NOT like less than full charges.

For mid-range loads , look at HS-6 (11grs = approx.1000fps w/210gr bullet) or AA#7.

I mainly use unique gun powder for all my leadcast loads in all my handguns. For the magnum loads i use the 2400 gun powder because it lasts longer over the 296 gun powder. I can load more rounds per pound using the 2400 powder.

Loading for the 41 Magnum is no different than loading for the 357 Magnum or 44 Magnum. Any powder/powders that work well for them will work well for the 41 Magnum too.

That said, all the above suggestions are correct. Use the slowest "magnum" powders for full power loads and slightly faster powders for medium to lighter loads.

The powders I do most of my handgun loading, my "powder trinity" is W231 (HP-38), W540 (HS-6) and W296 (H110. All three of those powders will work at different levels for your 41 Magnum and all 3 will meter very well since that are all Ball Powders. Other reloaders like to use the original powder trinity, Bullseye, Unique and 2400. Those powders will also work well but for the fact they don't meter as well and are dirtier.

I just have two powders for the .41...Unique and H110.

I have used Unique through several different powder measures and as someone above said, if you are not using a Ransom Rest you'll never notice... All my 8.0 grains of Unique load with any bullet is scary accurate.

You didn't mention what kind of loads you are looking for, 41Mag or 41Wusey.
Actually, I don't load for the 41 BUT, as has been said, it is no different than the other magnums S&W are famous for.

Titegroup is NOT going to find it's way into any deep, cavernous case where a double, triple or even quadruple charge can fit, that I load for.

Unique and Universal are your best bets for moderate loads. All of the Accurate Arms powders will meter like water and will give you from mild to wild in performance.
My 250gr 434640 44Mag load for my Marlin 1894 uses a full load of AA#9 and delivers 1 1/2" 100 yards groups @ 1800fps.
2400 is a candidate for those almost maximum loads to full bore ones.
H110/W296 is a choice for those "flame on" types of loads and the lighter the bullet, the greater the light show.
Lil' Gun might be a choice too if you want low pressures and high velocity BUT, there is a rumor that forcing cones and barrels have been affected poorly when used in the heavy hitting handgun cartridges, 45 Colt and above.

So, it all depends on what you want to achieve from your loads. Easy shooting or hunting/magnum loads.

What do you want?

Right now I'm just loading plinking rounds. Some 200 grain cast bullets on top of 8.0 grains of Unique. I figure pretty soon I'll be loading heavier loads, so I'm just making sure I have all my ducks in a row and don't spend 30 bucks for a pound of powder that throws me +/- .5 gr differences.

I load lots of 41 light loads with Unique and don't worry about a minor variation in powder weight.

Unique is pretty forgiving stuff isn't? It's been my experience that a 10th of a grain or so either way has little effect on bullet strike.
