.41 Magnum vs .44 Magnum

The .41 Magnum is a lot like the .40 S&W and the .357 Sig. All made for law enforcement. All embraced by LE for a time and all fell out of favor. I think at the end of the day LE has realized that the 9MM and .45 will handle most problems. Also, with the advent of many/most LEO's now being armed with long guns the need for a more powerful handgun cartridge has diminished. While the .41, .40 and .357 Sig are great cartridges, the lack of readily available ammo has put them in the back seat.

If you can only afford to buy one, get the 44 magnum. The round is much more popular and available as is the revolver itself.

The 41 magnum is a capable round but unless you can truly afford both, I don't see much purpose in have the 41 magnum also. The 41 magnum is powerful but not as powerful as the 44 magnum and the recoil isn't all that much different. So if you want a milder load, shoot 44 specials or hand load for the 44.

Availability of .41 Mag ammo is of no concern to me. The cost of store-bought ammo for either round is more than I'm willing to pay. Thus, handloading is the only option.

If the recoil is too stout, you can always load .41 Special.
