44 Special: any Unique/240gr recipes?
Hey All,
Just started to reload for 44 Special.
Looking for a middle of the road recipe for my Ruger Sheriff Vaquero (3.75" barrel).
Right now, I am using Unique Powder and a 240gr SWC.
My loads so far were 6.4grains of powder, which was very accurate, and pretty mild regarding recoil.
What is your favorite Powder/primer/bullet recipe for middle ground 44 Special round!?

7 grains with a regular primer is what I have used a lot. That tends to shoot flat enough for most targets under 50 yards. I guess the exact amount of powder will be what shoots to the sights.

Right now I'm using 6.5 grains of Unique with a Missouri 240 cowboy RNFP. Works well in everything except my Colt SAA. No need for magnum primers with most powders used in .44 SPL.

Unique & a 240 gr swc in a .45 spc is about as classic a combination as you'll ever run into.
Want to shoot a light load? 6 gr of Unique under a 240 gr swc
Want to shoot like Skeeter? 7.5 gr of Unique under a 240 gr swc
That, or anything in between.

Typically it's 6.0-6.7gr of Unique pushing a 240gr LSWC out of my 1950 and 24-3.
Also done 7.5gr of Unique for 'Skeeter Loads' using the same bullets.

After years of not loading for my 44 Sp, I loaded up a couple of batches last week that I have not had time to range check, but did shoot just a few to make sure everything was ok. I have 200 gr lead bullets and am also looking for some target stuff to punch holes in paper. Did the classis Unique load, but also loaded up 50 rounds with Hodgon's Trail Boss.
I just wanted to try this powder and Hogdon's Free Basic Reloading Manual gives me for the 200gr bullet - 4.3 to 6.3 grqins. The max load of 6.3 is published at 885 fps and 13,200 cpu. I loaded 5.9 grains and think they will be safe in my S&W pistols. I will let you know on group size when I get to the range vs the standard Unique loads.
I see that the manual (all this under Cowbo Action data) for a 240 gr lead bullet is 4.0-5.2 gr with the 5.2 published at 763 fps and 11,700 cpu.
One reason I like what i see at the bench with this Trail Boss is that the case appears to the completely full with no air space under the 200 grain bullet. That sure helps on looking at a reloading tray of 50 rounds with the powder thrown before I seat the bullets. I use single stage for my pistol stuff, because I an going to throw power charges and do a visual check of all of them together to detect any rounds with any visual variance in the powder charge.

For my Clements Custom 44 Spl conversion I use 7.0 of Unique, Large Remington Pistol Primer and a 240 grain cast bullet. I have gone as high as 8.0 but accuracy was at 7.0.
For a S&W third model I use 6.5 of Unique powder charge.
For a first model, Triplelock, I load 6.0 of Unique. All loads shoot well in the respective guns.
