LGS had limited powder on hand; I was seeking something for 308 Winchester.

He sold me on the idea Accurate 4350 was just the thing.

I can't find any 308 loads on the factory site, and I'm not loading 223.

Tips/recipes/commentary/witty remarks???

If they just happen to have 2520 or 2460 you will be verry pleased with the performance in a .308.....2520 was created with .308 in mind ....I have used many 8lb kegs of each. Another great choice is IMR 4895

AA4350 is a slow powder more suited for loading the 30-06 with 165gr bullets and heavier. It might be on the slow side for the 308 and for sure can't be used for loading the .223. I highly doubt you can get enough AA4350 in the 223 case to get it to fire. (but maybe fire)

AA2230 is the .223 powder and AA2520 is the Fort Perry powder and great in the .308.

On the plus side, I don't think you could fit enough 4350 of any version in a .308 case to go over pressure. That being said, you want something in what I term the "medium" burn rates, Varget, RL-15, IMR 4064, AA 2520, Win 748 are some of the ones I've had very good luck with. A question, what gun are you loading for?

AA4350 will work fairly well in the .308 with heavy bullets (180 grains), but the powder will require compression. Burn rate is similar to the other 4350s, but not the same. My batch requires a grain or two more powder to equal H4350 velocities.

I'm loading for a new Ruger Scout rifle, currently 150g spire point FMJ. Have a few 150g flat nose lead tip on hand.

The 4064 loads have been disappointing at best.

The Varget loads have been spectacular.

Have some Benchmark loads worked up for next range trip.

Trying to expand my limited exposure to bottle neck cartridge loading.

Have a little ancient MP5744 left from old IMSA days & the glories of 308 XP....maybe enough for 15-20 rounds, that's the end of the lot.

Varget is nearly impossible to find these days.

I was at the largest SGS in this part of the state this morning, & they had plenty of powder.....if I was loading for .50 BMG......

There are a lot of powders recommended here; all probably good choices but perhaps difficult to find right now. One not mentioned (and maybe just as difficult to locate) is H4895. With bullets in the 150 grain range, top .308 velocities are about the same as Varget and accuracy might be comparable or better.

Luckily there are A LOT of powders good for the .308, just not the slower powders like 4350.

If you can find:
H4895, IMR4895, IMR4064, IMR 8208, Varget, BL-C(2), Benchmark, W748, AA2460, AA2495, AA2520, RL-15, Power Pro 2000-MR, TAC and probably a few others I can't remember right now. IMO those powders are in the right burn rate range even though you can use powders which are slower or faster when you can't find anything else.

If it were me H4895, IMR4895, IMR4064, Varget, BL-C(2), AA2495 and AA2520 would be the top choices.

thanks for the tip AA. I'll be taking the list with me on my next hunter/gatherer mission.....

recent trip to large SGS gave me all the powder I could ever want....as long as it was for the 50 BMG....

It could work, I can make just about anything work, but it is not ideal for the small 308 case. It's at the top end of slow for the 308. Probably best with 165/180gr. I doubt you can get enough in to go over pressure.

The 308 was designed around the H335 (WC844)powder when it was developed.....................

Good luck finding a powder.

I went on line looking up 230-P powder and the site came up with Wikipedia, Ball Powders..............

I saw under Hodgdon the BL-C (lot 2 ) for the 308
(The "C" for burning cooler than the IMR powders)

but below that it also had H335 for 223 and 308 c/o full loads.

Sorry if I gave the wrong info to anyone..............

Just as a note;

My Winchester model 100 semi-automatic rifle liked the 150gr JSP best and I got the best groups with BLC and 4064 with loads under the factory or maximum fps for some odd reason.

I am just sorry I never had a bottle of 4895 to try out, since it works great in my 22-250, 270 and 30-06.
