Throughout threads on this forum and others there seems to be a number of users of Bayou Bullets who are also fans of the products. I am too and know many folks that use them that shoot competitive revolver and reload. This is my experience that motivates this thread to attempt to bring together information on reloading 38 special with Bayou Bullets. It is not easy to find loading information for Bayou Bullets. Please share and comment if you are inclined. Thank you.

I have used one load extensively which a friend provided me from his year plus of experience loading it and shooting it. Recently, I developed one to share as well. Each load uses the 160 grain RN 38 special (.357) Bayou Bullet. Overall length is 1.505 inches + or minus 0.003 inches. I measured hundreds. Ammo is taper crimped as Bayou Bullets calls for on their website. Each uses a Vihtavuori powder.

The load I am most experienced with is the load I got from my friend. It is 3.5 grains - 3.8 grains of N320, again, I measured hundreds. The high end of this load makes 120 power factor and the low end is closer to 105 power factor according to my friend that chrono'd this load. In use, these loads knock down steels which is my experience and a practical report on this N320 load. Never experienced a swollen case.

The load I developed recently uses 5.2 grains - 5.6 grains of 3N37. I have made and used 200 of these rounds. Nothing has been chono'd but my experience shooting them leads me to say this 3N37 load resembles shooting the N320 load described above. Each is very clean and low to no smoke. Steels fall at the low end of this load but the middle, 5.4 grains, may be the 120 power factor load based on my perception shooting it. Never experienced a swollen case. When I get to chrono these, I'll update.

To develop the 3N37 load, I used the 38 special section of the Lapua / Vihtavuori website as well as the 38 special section of the 'Handloads' website when the source was 'Vihtavuori'.

Bayou Bullets are Lead bullets. Reload accordingly. Begin with starting loads and work up. :)

I load a lot of .38 wadcutters to shoot through the snubbies. My favorite indoor range load is the bayou 138 wadcutter and 3.0 grains of VV n320 Winchester SPP.

Very clean load and shoots very nice groups in every S&W I have tried it in.

I used Federal Premium SP Match primers in described loads. Thanks for replies M&PUSER and RusselD.

Does anybody have reload data for Bayou for 9mm 115 grain? I use Power Pistol powder by Alliant

I just bought 1000 of those exact bullets for IDPA.

The guys at Brian Enos forums recommend 3.0 Clays (not Intl.), Fortunately, I have a couple of pounds from my shotgunning days (the price tags are $13.95!!!).

On this subject, where in the heck can you buy an RCBS round-nose seater plug? I've never loaded RNs of any kind and haven't bought a new plug in decades. LGSes don't sell them any longer. When I go on RCBS web site, it looked like they listed .38 seater plugs for specific Speer bullets.

you can load 5 grains of powerpistol and the 115. while accurate it will be loud!

Posting an update with chrono data for VV N320 and VV 3N37 loads for 38 special using 160 grn LRN bullet from Bayou Bullets. Chrono was set approx 5yrds from muzzle, revolver was a S&W model 67-5 with 4" barrel shot from sand bag rest. All loads used Federal Gold Medal Match SPP and had OAL of 1.50 inches. VV N320 used S&B brass and VV 3N37 used Federal brass. Observations are included with load data. Accuracy was very good for all loads based upon target set at approx 17 yrds.

3.7 grns VV N320 provided 714.3 +/- 22.8 FPS (n=10)
Notes: no unburned powder
5.2 grns VV 3N37 provided 728.3 +/- 24.1 FPS (n=6)
Notes: considerable amount of not fully burned powder (golden sand)
5.4 grns VV 3N37 provided 766.8 +/- 34 FPS (n=12)
Notes: very small amount of not fully burned powder (golden sand)
5.6 grns VV 3N37 provided 818.3 +/- 16.7 FPS (n=6)
Notes: no unburned powder, evident white flash at cylinder gap
