454 Casull light loads
Anyone loading the 454 casull with 255 gr SWC from Missouri Bullet, Unique powder, and SR primers? I have full house loads, mid range loads, and now trying to get some good light target loads. Like to push this bullet about 900 fps. Load up using 45 colt info + 10%? Anybody loaded this load? thanks trikerider

I used that combo in my SRH 454, but in 45 Colt cases (they're cheaper & I had more), with 9.0gr/Unique which is listed at 900fps (& it still leaded due to oversized throats). If you only have/want to use 454C cases I'd think 9.5gr would be a good. I occasionally used slow(er) powders in the 45LC, & 454C cases, to keep leading down in that gun. I'm now transitioning to Hi-Tek coated or plated bullets.
What gun are you loading for?

I have used MAX 44 Special load data in 44 Magnum cases to get "light" loads that were very accurate with no recoil. 45 LC load data for a Ruger should get you the results your seeking with 454 Casull cases.

Bluedot, I am loading for a Super Redhawk Ruger, 7 1/2 barrel, and using Starline 454 brass, Winchester SR primers, Missouri Bullet 255gr SWC brinnel hardness 12, unique powder. Bullets and powder I have a good supply is reason for using it. Lots of people say Trailboss, but hard to find any around here. Trying to use what I have on hand. trikerider

6" FA M-83.
Starline .454 brass, 9.0 of UNIQUE, 205M primer, 260 gr Keith cast = 980 fps
This load was very accurate in any of three FA 83's I have shot it in. Never went any lower though. Try 8.0 or maybe 8.5 grs.

Trailboss with that bullet in a .454 Case. I will have to check my load notes tomorrow. IIRC, I made several different powder weights and tested them. Let me check and I'll be back... John
Shooting them in a Ruger Alaskan.
And I've got some Bear Stoppers - 360 grain WFN-GC with Lil'Gun @ 1000 fps. Can't shoot more than a few at a time in the Alaskan

Yep, that's what I had. The throats were .454-.455" & just never shot cast lead good. Jacketed was fine. Ruger said to return it for repair & once they got it they said they wanted to replace the gun !? Never got a good answer why. Three months later they sent me a just manufactured SRH. It had the same loose throats so I sold it as they said that was in specs !? Replaced it with a S&W PC 460 & a M25-13, both of which have .4515-.4520" throats.
How are your throats? Do you have that problem too?

You can get in that MV range with about any of the faster pistol powders - Bullseye, Clays, Unique, Green Dot, AA#2, 231. It would take some experimenting with a chronograph.
My internal ballistics program suggests 8.5 grains of Bullseye, 9.2 grains of Unique, 8.8 grains of Green Dot, 8.0 grains for Clays, 9.1 grains of AA#2, and 9.1 grains of 231 to get the 900 ft/sec MV you want. All peak chamber pressures are FAR below maximum in .454 cases.
I am sure Trail Boss is a fine propellant for some applications requiring a bulk powder that fills the case. But it sure isn't very economical, at least double the cost (or more). I have always avoided it for that reason. I always visually check every single charged case before bullet seating to ensure there are no double charges when using conventional pistol powders, so Trail Boss is superfluous. I use Bullseye or Unique for almost everything. It's all I need.

Bluedot37, I have no way to accurately check them, but a .452 Hornady bullet drops through the cylinder. The .452 did measure .451 on my micrometer. So just thinking mine are oversize. Not very accurate, but did try to mike them with my micro and measured .453 to .4535. I just ordered 200 Hornady XTP (not mag) for use in jacketed in maybe 1200-1400 fps range, 250 gr..I have some XTP Mag for full house use. I did load up 6 rounds of Hornady XTP Mag 240 gr., with 10.5 gr. Universal and 6 rounds of Missouri Bullet 255 gr with 9.0 gr. Unique. Will give them a try to start. trikerider
