Load Data for Xtreme 185 FP

I picked up a box of Xtreme plated 185Gr FP and the only load data I can find is for 185 JSWC. Will this data work for the 185 FP? I'll be using CFE and Titegroup.

I assume that you are asking about 45 ACP?

And, the load data for those two will be close, but not the same. It is generally accepted that plated bullets are closer to lead, than jacketed, use that data if it can be found. Lead bullets for a given weight will usually take less powder than jacketed. As always, start low and work your way up.

Yes, 45 ACP. I'll keep looking but so far all I have found was the 185gr HDY JSWC at 5.0 to 5.5 from Hodgdon site. The Lyman 49th only lists the JHP in 185 gr. at 4.9 to 5.5, so the the two are actually very close but no lead data listed. That was data on Titegroup since CFE is to new to be listed in the Lyman manual.

The Lyman Cast Bullet book (4th and newest edition) lists a 185 gr lead bullet using 4.8 gr (897 fps) to 5.3 gr (944 fps) of Titegroup. No CFE listed.

Still, pretty close to the JHP stuff/data.
 
They are on the expensive side but I've found that the Hornady load data is excellent for producing very accurate ammunition and in most cases a bit "frugal" on the powder charges. Meaning, the Hornady data tends to be a bit lighter than many other sources but the resulting accuracy is great. Hornady is also pretty good about keeping up with the latest powders and will likely have your CFE listed in either the manual or a supplement.

You'll also find data on Hodgdons web site but I would recommend that you completely ignore the velocity data provided by Hodgdon. Because they do like to use longer than typical barrels that are also quite a bit "faster" than most rifled barrels. That said, I've used Hodgdon data fairly frequently and never saw a published load that showed any indication of excess pressure.

Any velocities over 1200 FPS we recommend either our Heavy Plate Concave Base or Hollow Point products for superior accuracy. We recommend keeping velocities to less than 1500 FPS (Feet Per Second) and using only a light taper crimp

All of our Hard Cast Lead Bullets are approximately 18 on Brinell, our Cowboy lead bullets are approximately 15 on Brinell.
 
Now I see why a person ends up with so many loading manuals.

It gets somewhat confusing (to me) with so many different bullet shapes, types, coatings when I can't find the data for the exact bullet I have. Figuring how to convert data I guess will come with time. :confused:

Maybe I should just buy bullets to match the data I have instead of the other way around.

Thanks for the reminder. I need to learn to pay more attention to this type of info when I can't find the data for the exact bullet I have. This is all slowly sinking in but I'm getting there.
