147gr 9mm Blue Dot problems
Hornady shows a 147gr HP/XTP with a COL of 1.10" with 5.7grs of BD.
Speer shows a GD or TMJ 147gr at a COL of 1.13" with 5.8grs of BD.
Lyman has a lead #356637 147gr at a COL of just 1.058 with 5.9grs of BD.
I have an empty case with a used inverted primer that I use for powder amount and the OAL with the bullet seated on top, then measured.
I can only get 5.4grs of powder in the case with thumb pressure down on the bullet for a flush seating at 1.13".
Is powder amounts of 5.8grs going to work....... seems like a lot of powder to compress, then will it stay compressed ?
I can't believe the 1.10 and 1.058" COL will swallow the 5.7, let alone the 5.9grs of Blue Dot powder.
Just need a green light before I start mashing these loads together.
I have HS-6 and SR4756 as standby powders, if you think this is a "No GO" loading for this size bullet with Blue Dot.
Trying for maximum energy for heavy metal targets.

Just my opinion but I would not use Flaming dirt in any of my 9mm guns.
Blue Dot is useless to be. Other than perhaps shotgun loads and Full House revolver Magnums. So many better powders for 9mm.

I don't do 9mm Luger any more but I used to load 147's with AA#5 for subsonic loads (for a suppressed sub-gun). I had lots of room left over for super-sonic loading. See if you have a less bulky alternative. Ivan

Listed COLs in manuals are MINIMUM lengths. They are not absolutes. You should never go shorter than the published COL, but you can go longer up to the length your particular weapon will tolerate. Use the "Plunk" test to determine this maximum COL for each different projectile type you use.

I have done the plunk test and 1.165" oal will work in my pistol.
Just that a longer oal means less fps, usually.
Speer and Alliant call for 1.13-1.14" OAL with their data of 5.8 grs of Blue Dot powder.
I am just asking if anyone has ever been able to load this much powder with a 147gr bullet in the 9mm case.
The best that I can do is 5.4grs that is "Snug" at 1.13" oal.
I don't think this reduction in powder will get the energy that I need.
I am hoping for 990 fps.
My best so far is 939 fps.

I don't think you could get much compressed powder load in a 9mm but maybe a little. Speer #14 sez you can use 5.8 grains of BD to get 1000 in a 4" barrel. I can only assume that they were able to get that much in a case. Lyman 49th sez 6.6 grain of BD for 1057 out of a 4" barrel. I wonder if you could compress the powder in several stages? Press a little, let it sit. Press a little, let it sit, and so on. It sounds like a bit of a tough job, but that should get want you want for steel targets.
