Light loads for 357 SIG?
Anyone have experience downloading the SIG cartridge? I'd like to come up with a soft shooting 124g cast load. I've looked thru a number of manufacturers guides; Accurate #2 seems to be a good candidate. I'm surprised there aren't any W231 or Titegroup loads out there.

I don't have an answer or even a guess, but I'm wanting to hear all the wisdom here. I'm just assembling equipment to reload 357Sig and my time is coming soon.

I've looked in my Lyman's manuals (both 50th and Cast) - none have recipes for this cartridge with cast and none show fast powders. Lee manual has fast powders for jacketed in that weight and all of those are subsonic with starting load and in 1200 with max. I guess fast powder is not a very good choice for this cartridge.

Iouri, subsonic is what I'm looking for. As much as like shooting full power 357SIG, it does get tiring. Like shooting 357 Magnum is fun but it's nice to switch out to 38 Special to work on the basics, etc.

Subsonic recipes from Lee 2nd edition for jacketed: Ram Zip starts with 5.8gr listed velocity is 1098. AA#2 starts with 5.4 gr with listed velocity 1066. Everything else in that bullet weight is supersonic. Use at your own risk yada-yada. Min OAL for both recipes is 1.140.

I don't shoot allot of them but my records show that the light/moderate load I've settled on for the 357 sig uses a 125gr lead TCFP ( Missouri #6 IDPA) bullet and 6.2g of Unique to an OAL of 1.135". Shoots more like a 9mm than a 357 sig and cycles the slide in my converted M&PPro40 just fine.
As always start lower and watch for signs of pressure. Also with the sig, watch your OAL as the bullets have a tendency to want to set back in the necked case.

I thought the "advantage" of a 357 Sig was that it was a relatively light bullet, achieving greater velocity.??
Essentially a necked down 40SW shooting a 9mm bullet.
Why shoot it at reduced velocity?

There is a reason tg & other fast powders are not in most data sources. Bullet setback, very potential KB. My cast bullet loads are with medium burners like unique, wsf or pp. Bullet choice is critical. You need enough bullet band in the case mouth for neck tension.

With the Sig's case design........
you need to think more on the rifle case like, data.
Slow powders will work better and be safer than the fast burn powders.
HS6, SR4756 or Unique could work if you can find any data.
I tried IMR4227 in my 9mm and it was too slow to work the slide
with a compressed load, even though it gave good accuracy.
Good luck with your quest.

A good moderate (1200 fps or so) load is 10.6 grains of AA#7 with a 125 grain jacketed bullet.

Using a fast burning powder, you still jack up the pressure really fast and is not generally good for high pressure rounds.
Even the AA #2, a very fast powde.r puts the pressure up there with a small amount of powder and still barely subsonic.

I bought a pound of AA#2 yesterday, and some 122g cast&coated FPs. Loaded up half a box with the starting load, headed to the range now to try them out.

Agreed on the Blue Dot, like firing flash bang grenades! Not as much fun as 125s out of the Coonan though.

I, too prefer the flash bang 357 Sig loads.
In addition to Blue Dot, Power Pistol does well in this regard. Especially from my M&P Compact.
Experimented quite a bit with milder loads, too.
LTCFP 147 HS-6 6.0 grains LO 935 HI 986 AVG 958
This is using magnum primers.

Success! The load seems very accurate, and cycled my pistol (SIG 5" 1911 w/ 18.5# spring) perfectly. The coated bullets ran great, easy to load and hardly any smoke, compared to shooting uncoated casts.

Taroman, where did you source the 147's from? The ones available from my local caster won't work with the SIG, too much taper. I'd really like to try those next, with both subsonic and supersonic loads.

6gr of unique, 124gr ltc, 1170fps out of a usp, 1120fps out of a p239. The p239 will group those under 1 1/2" @ 25yds. I want to give those a go coated.

Black Bullets Interntional

Plenty of parallel area for proper neck fit.
