Looking through my selection of loading manuals, I don't find any loading for a 100 RN cast bullet. Lots for 98 WC, and a few other weights but no 100 RN.

Looking for a mild (650-700) load with the 100 gr, for my wife in a Pre 30 3" (with J Frame size grips) that she won't find objectionable.

I "assume" a load of 231 in the 2.5 to 3.0 will get me in the ballpark. Does anyone have any pet loads in this range with the 100 gr cast bullet?

I would use the 98 gr start loads and work up to an accuracy point you like, or a recoil she is happy with.

H Richard,

I’ve never loaded any 100 gr LRNs in 32 S&W L, but with 100 gr swaged LSWCs that would have about the same volume of lead in the case, I’ve had good results with 2.5 gr of Bullseye. I shoot that in both I- and J-frames including the 30-1 I got for my very diminutive niece. All the usual cautions apply, but this is where I would begin.

You may have already looked at it, but the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook has ample loads, including a 100 grain with a different nose style, but it will give you enough information for a safe starting point.

32/20's

H R - I have had complete success with 4.0gn of W231 and 110gn lead bullet. Also use the same charge for my 32/20 shot shells. :)

An old cartridge can be found more easily in older data!

From the Hodgdon Data Manual#24, Copyright 1983
WSP primer, S&W 6" Test gun
Starting Load Maximum Load
98gr RN Trap100 2.1gr 735 fps -- 2.4gr 750 fps
98grRN HP38 2.2gr 740 fps -- 2.5gr 780 fps

HP38 and WW231, while they used to be very similar, are the exact same powder these days

From Hodgdon Smokeless Powder Guide 2006

90gr RN Trail Boss 1.5gr 599fps-- 2.9gr 730fps

For the 100ge RN Bullet, the starting load would be OK! But the upper end would be would be between 2.2 and 2.6gr.

From Cartridges of the World 4th Edition Copyright 1965

98gr RN Bullseye 2.1gr 780fps
98gr RN Unique 4.0gr 940fps (HOT LOAD)

From Accurate Smokeless Powder #1 Copyright 1994
(6" Test Barrel)

100gr XTP No. 2 1.9gr 614--2.1gr 700fps
100gr XTP No. 5 2.9gr 685--3.2gr 778fps

It would be safe to use this data for lead bullets, they will be faster!

My favorite powder for the 32 Long is Trail Boss, fills the case and very low SD. The 100 grain LRN I have actually weighs 98 grains and the two loads I use are below:

98 LRN, 1.5 grains Trail Boss, 600 fps, 5900 CUP
98 LRN, 2.0 grains Trail Boss, 730 fps, 8100 CUP

Forgot to mention that if you are looking at loads for a 100 grain solid base WC, the load for a 100 Grain RN is the same. The speeds I chronographed using a 4" 32 HE. Some people complain about the cost of Trail Boss, but when loading 32 Long, 32 S&W, 38 S&W, you will get about 2600 rounds loaded, which is about one-cent of powder per round.

I would go with the 98gr no matter what type of boolit it is and start at the min load and go from there. 2 grs different will not matter for start with and go from there.

As indicated, the 4th Edition of the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook provides load data for 100 gr cast bullets.

My pet load for our 3" 30-1 & 31-1 using MBC's 100 gr coated RNFP bullet is 2.4 gr Win 231 which falls about half way between Lyman's starting load of 2.2 gr (635 fps) and their max load of 2.6 gr (725 fps).

The Lyman manual shows a 2.270" OAL using a 100 gr Saeco (Redding) #326 cast bullet but I found Missouri's RNFP bullet comes in at 1.230" to the crimp shoulder.

Hope your wife enjoys that load,
