lil gun powder
I've heard that LiL gun powder will wear the forcing cone on
the XVR 460. is this true?

Lil Gun can show accelerated forcing cone and top strap cutting when used with lite bullets like the 200 FTX.
Should be little issue with 300 grain and up.
be safe

Lil' Gun has been shown to prematurely erode forcing cones on other calibers besides the .460. My experience with it was that it made my guns too hot to handle after multi rounds during range sessions. An issue I've never experienced with any other powder. This was not just in my magnum caliber revolvers, but my magnum handgun caliber carbines too. It never gave me enough difference in performance to warrant it's use and possible damage to my guns, so I quit using it.

I've had no trouble whatsoever with it in 357, 41 and 44 magnum revolvers and both 357 and 44 magnum carbines.

I've been warned away....
...from frequent use for the forcing cone. I've also read that it's touchy at max loads. I can' confirm that myself but I know more people that have quit with it than recommend it. It is made specifically for .410 bores.

Hodgdon Lil'Gun Smokeless Gun Powder
Good Thread. My Opinion is; there are other Powders
out there.
I stay away from this one, because of all that I have
read about it.
Good Luck and the best in your Endeavors.

I've tried couple lbs of it in my 460 and 500. It does produce probably highest velocity but gun becomes very hot very fast. Literally just take few cylinders and you need a glove to open cylinder. Switched to other powders since.

I have two Freedom Arms barrels in my parts box that are proof of the Lil Gun "issues". The gun is a 454 and was used only with 300 gr. bullets. As stated above....there are other powders to use.

Never had the need to use LilGun. I use H110 in all of my 460 Magnum Revolver Loads. I even use H110 in my .22 Hornet Rifles.

Lil gun is my “go to” powder for my 22 hornet, but I don’t use in handguns.

I look at this powder for rifle and .410 & 20 Ga. use.
I never understood people that use a powder that produces very high heat in its loads.
With all the info out there on this powder, I passed, using it for small arms.

Hodgdon’s Titegroup is another powder that quickly heats up my 38 Spl. shooting HBWC’s. Just like lil’Gun does in my 22 Hornet.
I’ve read that both of these powders have high nitroglycerin content. Titegroup is wet with nitro, it permanently marked the plastic of my scale when some granules landed on it.

Years and YEARS ago a guy on here posted pics of his damaged 686-3 6 inch, and asked if lil gun was the culprit. I swear the cone was paper thin and looked like it took a blow torch. The OP at the time claimed it was 6000 rounds of lil gun in full magnum fashion....I forgot the bullet weight unfortunately. I don’t know that it is any worse than 110, 296, or 2400, but a steady diet of of slow burning double base powder will eventually “flow jet” your forcing cone.

No lil gun will ever touch any of my revolvers.

Is this issue with Lil’Gun only a concern with revolvers? I ask because it’s my go-to powder for 38 Super/135 grain bullets combo.
Not trying to derail this thread, just concerned after reading it.
