9mm lead with Trail Boss powder ?

I was just wondering if any one has used TB in the 9mm with lead bullets?

It works great in the 38 and 357 with lead bullets.

Might it work with the new coated bullets, that are the new thing for indoor ranges?

I have two jugs of it, that might be put to use if it might work.

I once did the calculations for a fellow with this idea, and if memory serves, there is insufficient room in a 9mm case for a practical TB load with the usual 115-124gr bullets to cycle a 9mm Sigma. I don't think he ever tried it. I just use HP38 or Titegroup for 9mm.

I never gave the pistol recoil spring a thought.

My revolvers will be happy.

Now if just the smoke would leave town, so we can have some good clean air to shoot in.

It has been quite the year !!
 
Nevada Ed - I have been wondering the same thing but I was afraid to post the question! :( I also had not thought about the recoil sprang ;). I have a new CS9 barrel that I might try this with in my 6906 ... once you report back! Using it in a spare barrel lets me get the 6906 back into action quickly should I stick a bullet in the barrel. Total SWAG: the pressure won't be too high as long as you don't compress the load, and I think it'll have enough pressure to obturate the case. Maybe one of the newer coated bullets will be slippery enough.
 
Looking through Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook 4th Edition
9mm luger data w/ cast bullets ... No Data is shown for any bullet weight with Trail Boss powder .

I suspect the bulky powder is not compatible with the small case size of the 9mm ...
But you never know ... fill some cases to the base of a bullet and give them a go ! The load may not completely cycle a semi-auto pistol but might work well when fired in a revolver ...Range Test Time !

Trail Boss is a great powder for revolver loads but doesn't have the necessary power to reliably function an automatic. I've tried.

I guess by playing with springs some more I could find a load but I have reliable data with VV and other powders without playing more with TB.

Heavy 9mm load

Hi, I've been experimenting with a new 168 gr RN mould in 9mm from CBE. I've started with 2.5 gr of TB and worked up to 3.9 grains. This almost fills the case and is a compressed load. All loads have cycled through my Ruger PCC charger with a 6.5 " barrel with can attached. No shells/primers show any signs of excessive pressure. I don't have access to a chronograph, but I believe they are subs... Very quiet with can attached.
 
According to the manual for Trail Boss you should not be using a compressed load. Just a warning.

I really like Trail Boss for light loads. It's very accurate and although the flakes are quite large it meters well.
 
I’ve used 4.0 TB with a 200 grain SWC in 45 ACP It was very light and I was surprised at how well it cycled 100% of the time. The 9mm case is so much smaller I’d think it be hard to get enough powder to cycle but it sounds like an interesting experiment.
 
I'd look in the Hodgdon book or on their website (if data is published). If they don't list it, it's probably either dangerous, impractical, one of those things that's "possible as a stunt only", or all three.
 
I have some Tb, agree I don think there is enough case volume. If I remember right, you arent supposed to compress it.
