Bought a pound of CFE pistol recommended by the gun shop. I have loading data from the Hodgdon site.
Just looking to see if anyone tried it for 38 special.
Opinions please. I load 148 hbwc, 158 swc, and 125 jhp
Thanks

You did not state your barrel length so will leave out the 2" snub nose but with a 6" barrel.........

125 JHP CFEp reached.......... 1035 fps

158 Lwc with a full load did .. 939 fps.

In a .357 with a 125 JHP, it will match w231 and both are very accurate at 1220 fps +/-.

I have used it for 9mm recently and it worked well and burned clean also. I had not used it before but have had it for a while and figured I would try it.

Thanks for the replies.
I dont need high pressure loads because i mostly shoot paper target.
Bullseye works great but its been dirty so I am just playing with other loads.

Bullseye is my " go to powder " shooting 148 gr wc's . Dirty ? I could care less . My concern is accuracy . Bullseye powder is very accurate for me . Regards , Paul

Here are two targets that I have when testing out my new supply
of CFE pistol powder for accuracy and fps in my 2 & 6" barrels
with the 38 special case and the 158 gr Lead bullet.

Targets were at 15 yards off a rest for my chrony work.

Like all powders, it will work when you get the right load for your weapon.

Have fun.

I've used CFE in several including the .38 Sp caliber.

It works well. CFE is a versatile powder, but I'm still a Universal guy when it comes to paper punching.

I run 4.6 grains of CFE pistol behind a 158 grain SWC (copper plated) typically from xtreme bullets. Velocities are around 750 fps, right were I like it for IDPA.

Very good stuff

I bought a bunch of CFE pistol and use it a lot. It meters really well, so my powder measure drops very consistent loads. I use it for 9mm, 45 ACP, 38 Sp. with good results in all of them. Specifically for 38 Sp I shoot cast 158 gr SWC and 148 gr DEWCs as well as HBWCs. It's a good powder to have around. I have two pounds of it, and I'm sure I'll go through it sooner than later.

For years I used W540/HS-6 for major/IPSC loads in 38 super. The flash from HS-6 was pretty fierce out of a 5” 1911 so I started looking for.a low flash powder I could get decent velocities out of and clean burning. I wound up with CFEp and have adopted it for 38 special w/158 rnfp coated bullets, moderate loads in 357 and 45LC. It produces very good velocity, low flash, is clean, consistent, works well in my loads for 357 & 45LC with a variety of bullets in both revolvers and rifles and meters very consistently. It’s an excellent choice for a wide variety of cartridges and bullets.

Having said that there are plenty of excellent powders that will do an equally fine job. I’ve thought about what I’d pick if I could only have one powder. That would be a tough decision because I load 38/357, 38 super, 45LC, 45acp, 380 (yes now I do), occasionally 44 mag and 9mm. I regularly load with CFEp, Bullseye, HS-6, H110, 231/HP38 and rarely Unique. I guess if I had to use only one powder that does a good job with most everything it would be 231/HP38. 231 isn’t perfect but it works in about any cartridge and gives excellent accuracy.
