Howdy,

I've finaly wrapped up my training ammo session, 2k 9mm doesn't seem like much but sure take time on a turret...

Now on the the goodies 10MM! I love loading the larger caliber and I consider 10MM one of them(IMO)....

I would like to make some full blown, accurate 200gr 10mm rounds, so maybe I can get some guidance with what I have on hand(working the load up of course)

What I have on hand:
200gr Hornady XTPs
Brand spanking new Starline brass
Power pistol
Long shot
Blue Dot

Testing guns
1026/1066/1013

Suggestions on loadings would be swell, what I'm really looking for is what's the better powder to use, mostly to run in the 1026 I would like to take a Hog with the gun or possibly a Deer....

Thanks
Erik

I'd use the slower powder for what you want to do.

I use AA #9. I load full power loads in my 10mm. #9 is widely considered THE powder for full house 10mm loads. (#5 will do for FBI-lite loads. )

Looking at a burn rate chart, of the powders you have on hand, Longshot comes closest to AA#9. It's a little faster than #9. If those were my choices, that's the one I'd use. Do scrutinize the loading data for Longshot carefully. 2400 and Enforcer are also quite similar to #9 and should work excellently.

Interesting I haven't considered 2400 was holding that for .44mag...

Longshot, Power Pistol and Blue Dot (being the hottest) are all three shown for this specific bullet in Hornady's load data. They are all well within their claimed effective range for this XTP from midrange to listed maximums.

The XTP is usually regarded (by many) as an excellent bullet for hunting. Looks like you are on the right track... Good luck!

Hodgdons shows even higher velocity & MAX weight for the Hornady 200gr FMJ in Longshot. In the 180gr version Hornady lists their FMJ-FP, the HAP & the XTP ALL with the same exact load data. Hodgdons doesn't list the 180gr XTP at all: their bullet at that weight is the Sierra JHC.

Cheers!

P.S. For what it's worth, you just might wish to check out the Buffalo Bore site as it appears they still have quite a few 10mm varieties available to put into their carts?

Jus' sayin'...?

I'll start with longshot then I have a couple lbs of it...

As a hand loader I no longer feel the need to buy factory loaded stuffs.... tho I do understand they cut the work out being some pretty stout loadings....

If I could develop a load and take a animal with the "loading" that I made would be some kind of self achievement I haven't conquered yet :D

^^That was also something that I really needed to do also! I’m not a hunter but I do a prairie dog hunt and the first year I did it, I used factory ammo... and every year since, it’s been all my own (with Hornady V-Max bullets) and doing it with your own ammo was a huge part of the draw for me.

Couldn't agree more... BUT...?

Good for you!

There's more than a bit of a difference (IMHO) between jus' feelin' the ol' need and NOT being able to do something we (almost?) all took for granted a mere 15 months ago...? I'm only being truthful when I confess that I've actually purchased more factory ammunition in late 2019 & 2020 than in the preceeding 10 years. I've also reloaded (and ultimately) shot a lot more in that same 15 month period.

Those specialty ammo guys have access to test equipment and powders that most of us "average Joe's" can only dream of: hence, the kinds of energy and velocity numbers they can claim and sell.

I'm not so sure that were I going on a guided trophy trip I wouldn't want to do my extensive practice shooting with my "very carefully crafted to be as close as possible to...?" handloads and actually carry factory fodder for the actual hunt?

I'm not suggesting you do the same: I think it is admirable you have what is a surely a realistic and attainable goal, and are fortunate enough to currently have all the material you need to realize it!

That 200gr XTP @ 1,050 + fps ought to do the trick. I find it comforting that that's the velocity they formerly advertized for their Custom 200gr XTP: interestingly the 180gr XTP (@ 1,275 fps & 650 lb/ft) is what they now show in 10mm for "mid-sized game".

Good Luck! & Cheers!

I have a Glock 20 10mm. Using a 200gr Cast TC with gas check, I tried loadings with HS6, Power Pistol, 2400 and Bluedot. I had my best results, accuracy wise, with the Bluedot. Many people suggest AA#9, Lil Gun and Longshot as the best powders. I would try AA9 if I didn't have the other powders on my shelf.

It's probably apples to oranges with my G20 and cast bullets to your S&W's and XTP's, so offered as a data point only.

Good luck.

My old loading books state that a 200 gr JHP bullet with a full load of Blue Dot will get.................
1110 fps.

That puts out 547 ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle........
which should take care of most deer or hogs in the area.

Have fun.

Hodgdon's webpage list 1287 FPS with a max load of longshot with a 180 JHP. Also shows 1172 with 200 grain FMJ. I won't say my load, but I get 1225 FPS with a 200 grain WFNGC cast boolit in my 5" barrel. It is a 1911 platform with ramped barrel. I don't feed it a steady diet, but it is my hunting/backup when hunting, has been for about 15 years now.

One thing I have found with Bluedot, it is loud and has a bright flash. Longshot doesn't seem to be as loud to me and the flash is duller yellow, so not as blinding in low light.

Don't get me wrong, I like Bluedot, it is great for the range, but not a fan of it for carry or hunting in low light.

If you are going to shoot a 10mm, you should shoot a 10mm... seems far to many modern loads are just a little hotter than a 40SW...200 grain bullet at 1050? Heck no...bring on those old Norma level loads.

Except...

Well, except... He's making his own, with what he has, and he's not goin' for Griz or water buffalo or moose, etc.

Cheers!

P.S. What's wrong with basically the same performance (1050 fps, 490 lb/ft) out of a 40 S&W from Double Tap with a different 200gr JHP or a solid?

Think a deer knows the difference?

10shot avg out of the 1026

8.2 gr of long shot yields 1157 fps
No excessive pressures hodgdon listed max

8.6 of long, yields 1200 fps no excessive pressure signs

9.0 of long, gave 1250 and felt like a cannon flat primers are apparent

A friend of mine shoots a Glock 20, that was the "Standard weapon" when this load first came out.A 10mm with a 200 gr bullet going 1200 fps has 640 ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle and is one reason the FBI dropped it, because a lot of it's members did not do well with the heavy recoil of the "Full loads" that they had back then.
He also shoots a Rock Island 1911 FS in 10mm and todays pistols are greatly improved to take the beating that this full load developes and he uses 12 and 14 pound springs to help reduce slide battering to protect he weapon from being damaged, when he loads his ammo "Hot".

With a ACME 200 gr. FP coated bullet, he used Longshot powder and cut his testing off when he reached 1250 fps, which matched the speed of the factory Underwood loading.

If he wanted a faster load, he told me that for safety reasons , he would have to order a lonewolf barrel that suports the case a lot better than the stock Glock barrel but has not tried a hotter load in the 1911, since the recoil is on the edge of, do I really want to shoot 40 rounds of this ? ! :D

That is my point..If I am shooting a 10mm I want the deer to KNOW they got hit with one, not ponder if that was just a 40S&W as they lay there expiring..

also...."I would like to make some full blown, accurate 200gr 10mm rounds"

OK. Point taken per the O/P. Obviously I missed the "full blown" concept.

Now, how was the relative accuracy with those hotter loads of Longshot?

Jus' askin'...?

Cheers!

Well;
if your 10mm pistol can shoot this hot load, of a 200 gr. coated or Jacketed bullet near 1250fps...

I am very sure that you WILL know if you have hit the metal Gong !!
