Default 9mm shell holder dimensions

Does anyone have a drawing of a Hornady #8 (or equiv) shell holder for a single stage press for 9mm?

I never thought I'd reload 9mm but after a year of crazy prices I gave up and bought a set of dies and bullets from Cabelas, but they didn't have shell holders and online people are price gouging them. I'm thinking I can modify a more available $6 holder or just make one if I can find dimensions or a drawing of one.

The other option is a shell plate for the progressive press but again nothing in stock at sane prices.

Props to Cabelas though for still doing free shipping on $50 orders and not price gouging like so many others.

SOMETIMES! a 223 shell holder will work. It varies from Brand to brand.

A 40S&W/10mm shell holder does the job also.

well $15 is better than the $50+ with shipping I was seeing last night. The crazy one is the shell plate for the progressive/turret hornady is $250 on ebay, I'll wait for some to come back in stock at cabelas or the local shops before spending that kind of money, or just keep shooting my s&w revolvers which I've been reloading for years on.

Rim diameter seems to vary quite a bit on 9 mm. The better bet would be a .38 Super shell holder. However, after measuring one in comparison to a .40/10 mm, the .38 Super extractor groove opening is 0.345 in, the .40/10 mm is about 0.350 in. Rim opening is bout the same for both. If you can find a .40/10 mm got for it, but I'd seriously consider buying a .38 Super shell holder if/when things get back to normal.

Trying to machine a shell holder would probably cost you more than just paying a gouger.

The original LEE set of 11 Universal Shellholders (in the green case) USED TO BE less than $50! I've never used anything other than their #19 for 9mm, 357 SIG & 40 S&W.

A LEE Carbide 3-die set that included the powder measure & the shell holder was typically under $50 as well... What's next: "Parting out" a set of dies?

P.S. Pease note that the ones that seem to still be available (in the red case) are for their hand primer.

Things must be getting a lot worse than I thought .
Even during the shortages of 1996 , 2008 , 2013 and 2016 .... there were never a shortage of Shell Holders ... Good God !!!
What's next on the shortage list ?

Back when I was trying to duplicate the whole Lyman Catalog in my loading room I bought whatever J-type shell holders I could find cheaply to make "a whole set." Some have been used or drifted away or been lost over the intervening years (decades?) and of late I've just tried to find the necessary shell holders to complete sets of 310 tool/TruLine Jr dies so I can use them on one of my little TL Jr presses. Imagine my delight at finding a #12 J-type shell holder to go with the 9mm set of 310 dies... I found that almost as quickly as I found a "real" shell holder to use with my 7/8 X 14 dies on the "big" press. I guess I'm bragging now, but in my chowder box for Herters stuff, I even found the proprietary SH for 9mm if I want to use one of those presses! Being a hoarder may not be such a bad affliction after all!

You haven't tried to buy a bullet puller lately, have you?
The RCBS; you can find the body but no collets. The Forster; you can find collets, but no body.

crazy times, with the $250 going price on shell plates for the turret one I was really considering making a dozen and selling for a bargain price of $200 ea lol. (I have a machine shop). Actually what Hornady and the others sell these for is pretty cheap, shows how good they are at making them, if you think of $1/minute machine time that's only $60/hr shop time, not including material and cutters... so a $6 shell holder is a bargain.

thanks for the ideas, I'll try a 40 s&w holder, that's a good idea.

"What's next on the shortage list...?"

I'd say a total lack of common sense is clearly in the Top 10: might just be up there in the ol' WIN, PLACE or SHOW category by now!

(No) CHEERS!

Between my Dillon and Forster I don’t need press shell holders any more but for some reason I have three of them. PM me your address and I’ll send one your way.

And I thought spending $40 to $50 for a Hornady LNL plate was outrageous!!! $250 is mind blowing.

I would have never dreamed...Bullet Pullers ! Wow !
I guess it was in the 2008 shortage ... I went to a good buddies gun and reloading supply shop to get a few reloading supplies and walked into a store with bare shelves... He had just about nothing left to sell... a few bags of plastic shotgun wads . No reloading dies , presses , bullet moulds , powder , primers ... etc !
After that I started stocking up on dies , not a shell holder but a complete set of shell holders ... and bullet moulds . Lyman had stopped making many of their designs and stopped making all 41 caliber moulds ... I saw the writing on the wall and started buying moulds , reloading dies , shell holders , powder , primers , alloy for casting bullets and stocking high wide and deep ...
No more buying what you want when you need it... those days are gone .

I'm glad you were able to find one.

One thing I never do is suggest that reloaders buy anything made by Lee. There is one exception though and when things return to normal consider getting their sets of shell holders. I mainly load on a progressive but have 3 single stage presses and put one of those sets (and a bunch of other replacement parts) in my stock just to have for contingency. Who wants to be up all night before a match looking for a lost or broken part? Not me.So I didn't get it for times like these but having it is a low cost insurance policy that nothing will break or get lost LOL!
