High Gun and Perfect Pattern
Two new flattened spherical shotgun powders from Hodgdon. Does anybody know if they would be suitable for handgun? Load info on the labels is shotgun only, at least according to the images at Powder Valley. They ought to meter well.

Most likely suitable for handgun if they are in the same burning rate as other shotgun powders. They are probably listed as for shotgun only because of liability issues with no handgun data yet developed.

Neither powder is listed yet on any burn rate chart I can find, even ones just listing Hodgdon powders. Their website only lists them for 12 gauge shotgun loadings, and the can labels don't show anything but shotgun load data. Might take a while for the experimenters to figure out some loads that work in handguns.

I'd guess these to be in the range of red dot and bullseye.
High Gun might emerge as a good pistol powder at some point.
Time will tell

I did not see them listed on the Hodgdon reloading site.
It will be interesting to see how much powder it takes for a 12 Ga.
1 1/8oz payload to get to 1200fps, for the standard 3 Dram loading
with both powders, as well as the pressures they present.

I am content with Bullseye and Unique powders. At my age I do not need a dozen different powders or for that matter, green bananas in my pantry.

High Gun sits right between Bullseye and Titegroup in terms of burn rate, so I'm sure it would work well as a pistol powder. Perfect Pattern is a good bit faster burning, very close to e3. Doubt it would be useful for pistol loads.

I saw them in the store for the first time today. Hodgdon says nothing about pistol loads for these powders. Maybe they are like International Clays and just not suitable for handgun. We will have to see what develops.

e3 does work in 12 Ga. but it was not my best trap powder,
even though I could get 7/8 to 1 1/8 oz. pay loads loaded.
You do need to find the correct wads for hulls and powder amounts used
in order to get a good crimp, this data is NOT available at this time !!
I'll pass, for now.

This is based on info I've read on other forums.....
People are saying that Hodgdon reps have told them that High Gun is just a rebranding of Titegroup. They are identical. The purpose is to give it a name that will draw in more shotshell users. Since it is a very high density powder, it really needs to be used in tapered hulls like Rem STS.
Perfect Pattern is an actual new powder. It is also rather dense. A given number of grains is about 7 MEC bushing sizes smaller than Titewad. PP has a lot of listed loads that are useful for Trap at both 1oz and 1 1/8oz but due to the high density, it is probably best suited for tapered hulls.
Both powders are small grain-size so will be prone to migration and charge-bar dribble.
I was hoping for something more like Clays or Red Dot: larger flakes and low density.

Sounds like both would be fine for standard pressure loads in common calibers like .38 spl and .45 ACP.
