Unhappy Searching for 32-20 brass

I have been searching for 32-20 unprimed brass but am now aware scams are everywhere. Does anyone know of a reputable seller. Starline has a scam alert on their website and all the usual places are out of stock. I feel like a target every time I run out of ammo!

Someone from Starline posted here a few weeks ago to say that they would resume production of .32-20 brass, but they were too jammed up with other priorities at present. No estimate given when that might be. If you are really desperate, .32 Long cases will work in a .32-20 chamber.

Here in central MN my LGS has UltraMax 32-20 ammo for sale at $99 per box of 50. It was loaded with Starline brass. $2 per round, but it was a way to shoot the 1892 Winchester I recently acquired and have the brass for reloading.

I check Starline every couple of days hoping to see that they are taking orders for 32-20 brass.

I recently acquired a .32-20 Hand Ejector and went looking for brass as well. Almost fell into a scam myself; even placed the order and gave them my credit card info. When I received an email telling me the credit card “held” my order until I paid with zelle, I knew it was a scam. I had no idea the brass was unobtainium until I went looking for it. Until it becomes available, I’ve got a nice looking 100 year old paperweight

I’m patient, though, and I’ve got a friend with a box he’s going to trade with me for some other ammo next time I see him at a gunshow. In the meantime, I’ll keep looking and hope Starline resumes production. I’ve heard the brass doesn’t have a long life, only good for five or so reloadings, so that’s another reason there’s none available.

Yep. In same boat.
Did both an email and a "contact us'' note to Starline regarding just being put on a 'notify' list for .32-20 brass. No response to either.
And the GB sellers can pound sand at the scalping figures they're showing.

The brass is thin and does not hold up well to repeated reloading. I have a very nice Colt Army Special in .32-20 that I seldom shoot because a significant percentage of reloaded cases develop sidewall splits after one reloading. I do not know why, possibly that the Colt’s chambers are slightly enlarged. At one time I had a Winchester 73, it also had the same case life problem. Maybe two or three reloads before case splits occurred.

Agreed, the brass is thin and it's easy to deform or crush a case in the neck area if you're careless when placing the case in the shell holder during handloading steps. I've ruined a few cases like this; same goes for the .22 Hornet and other thin-necked cases.

I've loaded the .32-20 for a couple of rifles and one revolver beginning forty or more years ago. I don't recall ever losing a case except for the reason cited above. I've never had a neck split and cartridge life with cast lead bullets (all I've ever used for handloading) and standard pressure loads is as good as with any other cartridge case - a very long time, but I don't count the number of loadings.

Agree with this. I've crushed a few cases. You do need to be careful sizing 32-20 cases (if you can find one).

You can find it pretty regularly on Gunbroker but it ain't cheap. Usually $1.25 to $2.00 a case.

I have a S&W 1899 in .32-20 and a Winchester in the same. A fun round to shoot in either gun.

They are available right now but I wouldn't hesitate. It's from Optics Planet so it's a safe site.

Another thanks! IIRC, I was on a 'notify me' status with them for this, but don't believe I ever got a notice. Just ordered some.

Annealing will help with prolonging the life. I do it the easy way, with a power drill and propane torch as seen on Youtube. Even newer brass will benefit as often it is too hard. If its dirty on the out side after firing, it is too hard to expand and seal the chamber. Especially with moderate loads.
Most of my brass is older batches found at gun shows, though I do have some new Starline and R-P. you buy it when you find it.
I've lost more cases from oops when reloading than from splits.

John

Might want to check the reviews before ordering......
OpticsPlanet Reviews - 215 Reviews of Opticsplanet.com | Sitejabber

Ditto only I use R-P brass.

The 32-20 is my favorite cartridge. I shoot it in both revolver and a carbine. I do take my time when resizing the case as the case mouth and neck are thin.

I must be one of the lucky ones. I've made several purchases from them without a hitch.

Wow, I didn't know so many of y'all needed 32-20 brass. I'm glad I saw it in passing while on the site! I'm very glad I could help.

I have been buying for years and never had a problem.

If it’s that hard to find , I have a source for commercial ammo that I’m sure can be bought for 2.00 a round. Send a message if interested.

Ok so I reached out and was mistaken. Apparently he too researched the price , and 2.00 a round won’t do it.

Updated. See last post.

I got an email from Optics Planet and said my order will ship 7/7. I have picked up 50 new and 100 once fired brass locally and am now in the process of reloading.

I went to a gun show today. There was a bag of fifty new Winchester 32 WCF (just the brass) for sale on one fellow's table. The price was marked $80.00. I kept my money.

I got a 32-20 treat today. Cleaning up in the garage and found 2 boxes of loaded ammo..2 500 rd boxes of 22 ammo 10 20 rd boxes of 223 and a yellow Win box of 38 special. Was all packed in a 20 GA shot shell case. It musta been packed there since we moved here almost 20 years ago. I just thought it was 20 GA ammo

My experience with them is exactly same, that seems to be their MO. In order to find out that they don’t really have an item I had to complete the order with payment info and then they tell you they don’t have the item also it’s no a simple process to cancel an order. I don’t bother with them anymore.

They depend on Starline to supply brass. Starline hasn't made any 32 WCF in years.

Looks like you were right. Mine is supposedly set to ship on 7/12 which is about 5 weeks after placing the order. We'll see if it actually does.

The order says Winchester brass not Starline. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Winchester brass is made by the Olin Corporation.

Either way it's imaginary because you don't have any and your money is gone.

Yeah, you pays yer money and takes yer chances. Like I said earlier, I've never had a problem with Optics Planet before. If I get stiffed this time, shame on them. If I order again from them, shame on me.

Are you guys actually thinking Optics Planet is going to take your money and not deliver the product? Really?

I highly suggest you contact Optics Planet and ask them before you spread rumors on the NET about a company who does not have a reputation as a scammer site.

No, I don't have any connection with them. I have never had a problem of them not delivering what I ordered. They don't ship as fast as some others on the NET but they do send it.

I’m not saying a business will “stiff” you if they take payment for a back order, you can probably get your payment refunded. If a business has customers that order the moon and they take your order and place it on back order they will end up with a sum of money in the bank and some business could keep a customers money until the customer asks for it back, just in case they ever get the moon in stock. The businesses that I buy from don’t charge for an item that is back ordered until it ships.

I don't think anyone said that. What I said is the truth:

Might want to check the reviews before ordering......
OpticsPlanet Reviews - 215 Reviews of Opticsplanet.com | Sitejabber
"OpticsPlanet has a rating of 1.7 stars from 215 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers complaining about OpticsPlanet most frequently mention customer service, credit card, and next day problems. OpticsPlanet ranks 147th among Outdoor Equipment sites."

In other words most customers of Optics Planet think their service is bad. Call it what you want.

As I remember, Powder Valley (when they had powder) would take your order but not charge your CC until they shipped. Same with Roze. That’s the proper way to do it.

I don't know, it sure sounds like some are thinking they won't get produce after paying.

Has anyone contacted them yet?

Yes, as it should be. 32-20 brass has become rare as hen's teeth the last few years. If there's any chance that my order will be filled, I'm willing to float them $30 for a few weeks. Even if it takes 2 months, I'll be happy when they arrive. What other option is there for getting some? $2 apiece on GB, or $3 apiece already loaded isn't for me.

Your point however is well taken. It is a poor business practice, and even if I get the brass sometime soon, I'll think twice about ordering from them again. It will depend on the situation and availability elsewhere.

Just sent you a PM.

I checked my order status and it says expected to ship 7/12. I’m confident that a large established company like optics planet wouldn’t take your money and not ship product, but I’m not that confident the brass will ever materialize. At worst, we get an email that our orders were cancelled because the product became unavailable. They haven’t charged my credit card and I know they won’t unless they actually ship.

I’ve ordered a lot of items from OP over the years and never been disappointed. It does seem a little shady to advertise something as “in stock”, but will ship in 4-6 weeks. Obviously, it wasn’t “in stock” and somehow they were anticipating a supply would be available within that time frame. A little weird, if you ask me, but I’m not worried about losing money.

I ordered 38 S&W brass from Starline, and the wait was over 30 days. I finally received a notice from them that I had to call and give credit card again, as it was over 30 days. I received the order within a few days. Does Optic Planet do the same thing? Tomorrow will make 30 days since I ordered. Guess I will see.
