Default Where’s the .357 Magnum brass?

Did they shut down production to make more 9mm? It’s hard to even find “name brand” .357 Magnum cartridges. I guess I’ll guard my small supply of once-fireds like treasure.

I just did a search on ammo seek and found 22 entries. Cheapest is once fired for $0.15 ea. and new Starline for $0.202 ea. Plenty available.

Even though Starline says "Backordered" my experience is that they ship within a week or so for backordered items.

Thanks, when I looked for Starline before, the sources said no back order.

You brass is in the interdimensional brass box in my basement. Anywhere in the world a 357 Magnum case hits the floor/ground it gets popped into my brass box.

On a less ridiculous note you need to check out Starline brass. When I first started loading 357 Magnums I took what I learned after Sandy Hook and stocked up, still have one unopened bag of 500 in my stash. They make excellent cases with a very good service life and are an excellent value.

I just checked Midway USA and they only list Starline and Hornady .357, both out of stock no back order.

Glad I have a lifetime supply of new and once fired brand name brass.

I am holding off buying any 357 cases at this time, with the prices being asked.

However, if you need them, they are out there.

I've still got new umprimed Remington, Federal, and Winchester brass from 1980 in .357 Magnum and several boxes of Winchester .38 Special in Nickel, new in the box. Used to buy a lot of brass when shooting silhouette and reloading a lot. I bought it by the case and and shared with a couple of friends who reloaded. Let's see now, in 1980 they were $4.50 to $4.95 per 50 round box, how much would that make them today. I'm afraid to figure it. I think I'll just go reload a few boxes.

Figuring in inflation, prices are probably about the same now as they were then.

I immediately thought of the couple of thousand I have in my reloading room and thought "there's a shortage?!?"
But in reality, there seems to be at least a little bit of "shortage" for everything reloading these days...

Actually less from what I calculate. I figure a mean price of $9.46 per hundred ($4.50+$4.95/2=$4.73 per 50 or $9.46 for 100). According to an inflation calculator available online, $9.46 spent in 1980, is equal to $34.92 with a cumulative inflation rate of 269%. Most prices that I see for new Starline .357 brass are less than $25 per hundred.

I have no doubt you're right. My point was that many mistakenly cling to a "prices in the old days" mentality, assuming everything was cheaper and a better deal than what it is today. Certainly true in some instances, but in many it's nothing more than a false presumption.

Will their site allow you to add out of stock items to your cart?
Because I just added 100 count and a 1000 count to my cart and it didn't give me any indication that either was out of stock...
Unless you only get that info when you try to complete checkout?

I just now looked at the Starline site. They have 357 brass available. I have ordered brass from them several times with very good results. Go to the source and buy direct. Cost seem to be the same in the past for me. I have often got a few extras in the order but you might not. I have been shorted by middle men in the past as well.

It says backordered when I go there. You can place an order for backordered items but if it does not ship in 30 days they cancel the order. Your credit card only gets charged when they ship an item.

My last three SL orders were in "backorder" status ( orange light), but allowed you to order. When they mark it as such they are getting ready to make a run. Those on the BO list get theirs first. Any that's left over and the green status light goes on till it's sold out. Then the red out of stock, no order status light goes on. Then you wait. Rinse and repeat. I've never waited more than two weeks for my backordered brass to arrive and they have free shipping. Snooze you lose!

I just added 1,000 to the cart and on the cart page right on the left side of the line, the first item is the description of the item. Right under that item name there is a yellow oval "box" with the word Backordered in it. You might not have seen if when you did your check.

I have been reloading about everything I shoot since about 2008 or so. After Sandy Hook, a buddy called and asked me if I had any .380. I couldn't for the life of me believe it was sold out everywhere. I hadn't even looked for loaded ammo in years. He was right. I gave him a back of factory to hold him over. He drove 80+miles 1 way to come and get it.

I don't think I've ever had a problem buying new .357 brass. Shooters never left it at the range like 9mm but it's always been available here and there. Starline has some shortages periodically but they always come through for the more popular cartridges. You just have to get on their backorder list and wait awhile. They crank it out when the orders reach a certain number.

I don't think I have ever bought new 357 mag brass. I have a large stash from the years before I started reloading and acquired from friends that don't reload.

Yeah, I never actually looked at my cart - I just saw that it allowed me to add it to my cart.
I've never ordered from them before so I was surprised they'd let you add an item they don't currently have to your cart. I've never seen a site that will let you do that. Kinda messed up if you ask me.

Same here. Though I have bought some once-fired early in my reloading days. I've sold more than I've bought though.

No it is not . Place an order and they will send very shortly . If they allow you to order they either have them or will shortly. I just received my 1000 within a week of ordering as in yesterday

Starline just emailed me that my order has shipped, for delivery on the 30th. I guess the "backorder" message was just to deter tire kickers.

I've repeatedly ordered 41 Long Colt over the past several years. None shipped so far. They keep cancelling my orders.

I imagine the more popular calibers get the priority like 357 mag . I just did get an order of 500 mags from them as well. It is very frustrating not to be able to get the lesser cartridges like 41 colt . I want some 35 remington but nobody making any now

FWIW, allowing customers to place an order for out of stock items just seems kinda deceptive to me.
If it is a popular caliber that they plan to produce in a reasonably short period of time, fine, but for the less popular/common calibers, allowing people to place an order that will NOT be filled seems like giving your customers false hope.
That just seems wrong to me.

How hard would it be to say, “Your order will be filled once _ amount of orders sre placed,” if that’s how it works?

That seems like a much more up-front and honest approach.
With the sophistication of e-commerce web sites these days, that certainly doesn't seem like that kind of solution would be too difficult to implement...

If it is a popular caliber that they plan to produce in a reasonably short period of time, fine, but for the less popular/common calibers, allowing people to place an order that will NOT be filled seems like giving your customers false hope.
That just seems wrong to me.
They (Starline) tell me credit card companies will not honor orders that are more than 30 days old.

I wouldn't be too critical. This is a good company that stays in tune with the needs of handloaders. Your assumption may be wrong altogether, but you might call them. I'm pretty sure they'll answer your question courteously.

OK, so then don't take orders for product you won't have in stock within the next 30 days. What's so hard about that?

Well that is definitely not true. I ordered an item from Midway in March...Delivered Juneteenth or so. They did not charge the card till shipped though...but order date was March 16th on the paperwork.

I wish they would.

So in your case the credit card company didn't follow their own "30 day rule" for new charges?

As Artie Johnson would say "Zat ees veely interestink..."

Backordered means there is none in stock. Lots of companies use the term. It also means they expect it to be back in stock but nobody is going to give you a timeframe because......well, they don't know. If Starline doesn't get enough orders they aren't going to tie up a machine and operator to produce, say 38 Short Colt for 10 people, when they can't manufacture enough 45 ACP to satisfy a thousand people.

I don't think it's all that difficult to understand. I waited a long time for 38 Short Colt, but you know what, Starline made some for me once I was on the backorder list.

Yeah, I think the term "backordered" is pretty self explanatory.

But taking orders for something that isn't in stock and isn't likely to be produced or in stock in the foreseeable future - and then repeatedly canceling the order is still kinda disingenuous, or even borderline deceptive, IMO.

To me that seems like leading the customer on - giving them false hope. How is that good for anyone - for the company OR for the customer?

It's crazy what you can find out there...when I got the much needed 357s I also got 1000 new Win primed 30-30 brass for 50 bucks. Last 1000 LRPs I saw went for over100 dollars...new primed brass for 5 cents each?? I bought em even though I didn't need em...and today stopped at a garage sale not far from home. Found 3 boxes of a commercial reloading company's 22 Savage Hi Power ammo...at giveaway prices..3 dollars A box I gave em 10...A friend with a Savage 99 is going to be very happy. The only shooting items the guy had...no rifle unfortunately
