45 auto rim
Has anybody made auto rim from 45 Colt brass? I know the rim thickness is different. If they were cut down to 45 apc length so they head spaced on the mouth like an apc. Thanks.

.45 Colt brass + case trimmer + a little effort = shorter .45 Colt brass.
BUT, how are you going to crimp them???? You're going to need a die that will do it, either a cut off .45 Colt die, or one of the old .45acp seater dies with a roll crimp built into it.

Why not go with 45 Auto with clips until Starline has 45 AR again?

Cut off .45 Colt brass with the thinner case rim means greater case capacity than Auto Rim brass. Not a great idea.

It should work in theory. But then you'd have a small amount of unsupported case head sticking out at the rear of the cylinder. That would make me nervous more than anything else. Why not just use .45 ACP without the moonclips? I do that sometimes in the 625-4 and any sane load can be plucked right out with the fingernails.

I would suggest buying some third-moon clips. These make it easy to clip and unclip two .45 ACP cases with your fingers. Ranch Products has them.
People may consider them "pesky" but I sure would prefer using third-moon clips to the effort and uncertainty of converting .45 Colt for your purposes.

A lot of trouble resulting in very little benefit. Clips are not needed for nearly all M1917s, Colt or S&W. At least not for casual shooting where rapid unloading-reloading is not a consideration. I prefer the third moon clips.

Thanks . I have third clips. Just thought I would ask the question.
As of yesterday starline showed out of stock
The only way I can get brass is if I buy Buffalo Bore .I don't want to spend that much for 20 rounds.

The shortened case needs to headspace on the case mouth. Roll crimp will not work.

How much brass do you need? A WTB might find it for you.

I broke down and purchased "factory" loads from Buffalo Arms - you may have to wait a while, and it is not cheap, but loaded to vintage specs. I used it in a shaved Webley .455. Worked like a charm, and the company is easy to work with, really helpful and nice people. Black Powder Shooting Supplies & Accessories

When I've bought "backordered" brass from Starline, it was usually sent within a month, sometimes sooner.

Starline makes .45 special brass. It's the same size as .45 autorim and will work in .45 colt revolvers.

I suggest that you place an order with Starline. I’ve ordered at least 3 different “out of stock” case types over the past couple years and only 1 took more than a month to show up. My theory is that Starline sometimes shows items “out of stock” to discourage creeps who resell on GunJoker or EvilBay.

No.
I have two Reloading Stores in driving distance. When Starline dot Com shows out of stock I call either of my local shops and they have what I need. Just because Starline is out of stock it does not mean the "Reloaders World" is out of stock.

When I bought a 25-2 I got 100 pieces of auto rim and about a dozen moon clips. I load on a Forster press and found out that a special adapter was necessary for the auto rim so I tried the moon clips. Loved them. If you're interested in the brass let me know.

All you need is an inexpensive Auto Rim shellholder.

NOT that simple! Forster is the old Bonanza single stage press and the shell holder is a complete set of "jaws" that need to be installed to load Auto Rim brass.
I have done it and just love using my Auto Rim loads in my 25-2.

You may be right. I've been using a Co-Ax for more than forty years for rifle ammo, but still load handgun ammo on a '60s Texan Turret press that uses regular shellholders. As much as I like the Co-Ax, there a few things it's not well-suited for. I have several jaw sets and maybe one that will do the Auto Rim. I've always found it a good idea to have a spare press, like just about any single stage.

You need a special set of jaws to hold a shell holder. I don’t remember the cost but it was more than I wanted to spend for one particular round in a new gun that I wasn’t even sure I would enjoy shooting. Turns out it was great to shoot and worked great with the 45 ACP which I already load.

Why would you even bother ? AR brass is not particularly hard to find . Starline is what I use , get on their list. If you watch the trader section on the various gun forums you will find it also. I bought anywhere from 300 new cases to 800 new cases last year on 24 hour Campfire and another batch off of Cast Boolits.
I load mine on either a Lyman Tru Line Jr or a 310 tool set , normally . I also can load them on a Lee cast classic using a set of standard .45 acp dies and the appropriate .45 AR shell holder that is not hard to find in any brand you want.

Years and years ago my first venture in reloading was with 45 AR and Lee Loader. (Probably for a whizzed Webley).
I do remember that those Auto Rim cases had the tightest primer pockets I've ever seen. It was a real adventure seating primers.
Wear a heavy glove, whack it one, go across the room and retrieve the priming rod. Try the next one........

I have a Lyman and an RCBS press and 2 or 3 sets of 45 acp dies. Just need a shell holder and brass. I did get on Star lines list. I ordered some moon clips today since I do have plenty of cap on hand.

If you haven't found any yet, I have a 100 or so rounds of brass, maybe 2x fired, and a Dillon 550 conversion plate to load on your 550 press. If any interest, send me a PM.

How so? If trimmed to 45AR length noting but the rim will be above the cylinder. Due to the thin rim of the 45LC versus the thick rim of the AR I believe FTF's would occur. I se it as a wasted effort.
