Went to a 100 yard range to re-zero my Winchester 70, in 270, after putting a 16CX scope back on. First a few clicks to zero it for the 130 grain Hornady loads, then for interest, shot some 150 grain Hornady loads. I was curious to see if they differed much in their POI. I shot off a sandbag, and I am sure my Win 70 is capable of one inch groups, but with my shake and vision, this is all I could do. I suppose with time and effort, I could find a load for each bullet that would impact at the same POI . But I am just going to go with the 130's, and I have lots of them, and only one box of the 150's left. Here the diference... First the 130's ..

Thank you for sharing your results and

What of curiosity what are you shooting
for Reloads?

The 270Win this one of my favorite cartridges
for shooting and reloading. For reloading
my best results are with IMR 4350 powder
and Hornady 130gr bullet.

The .270 had a reputation for shooting both bullet weights to the same point of impact, something I never quite bought into. Your results seem to back up my thoughts. I have always stayed with 130’s myself.
My dad, who taught me much of what I know about deer hunting, taught me that I would get just as many shots under a hundred yards as I would over a hundred yards, and my experience bears this out. So you should be good to go with either weight for half your encounters!

For my 150gr Hornaday SST boat tails, product number 27402, I used RL 19, probably because what I had in 2021, standard primer, 53 grains, velocity 2700 fps.

For my 130 grain loads, Hornady 130SST, boat tails, product number 27302, VHT N 560 58 grain, velocity very consistent 3000 fps.

Perhaps the slower velocity of the 150 gr loads results in a bit more "drop" at 100 yards.

I was reminded that a 270 "kicks" just as much as a 308, not surprising of course. My Win 70 rifle is a new "pre-64" with perhaps only a hundred or so rounds shot.

I will use up the 150's then use only the 130 Hornady bullets i have. SF VET

Very common for varying weight bullets to have different points of impact. In fact, it's more the rule than the exception. Even bullets of the same weight and configuration from different manufacturers will often have different impact points; the degree of divergence may or may not be significant.

270 fun

Thanks for sharing! My shooting is with,
270Win. 130gr SPFB Interlock Horn. # 2730 /
IMR4350 51.0grs / CCI #200 Large Rifle /
Rem case / Lee FCD Light Crimp / 2800fps?
Heat Index for IMR4350 is 3760 kj/kg.
In Cheyenne WY verified 2830fps.

Should give well over 3200rds of accurate
reloads.

My RL19 54.1grs, 54.5grs reload had very
similar results. Pleasant shooting.
FPS un-verified. Heat Index for RL19 is 3980
kj/kg.

Also experimenting with a 100gr Speer bullet
just because.

Rifle used is a favorite unmodified brand new
in 2003 Remington Model 700 ADL 270Win
22”bbl, I think 1-10” twist.

Also have a 2019 Winchester Model 70
Featherweight, bolt action, short action,
controlled round feed-claw extractor.
24”barrel, 1-10” twist.
This 270WSM Winchester Short Magnum
reloads just the same with similar shooting
results as above.

I like both 270win and 270WSM, and both
Rem and Win rifles. I definitely don’t run
them fast.

I have not tried any 150gr bullets yet. Don’t
know if I will because of the game around
here; deer, coyotes, raccoons, skunks,
gophers, and squirrels.

270WSM. Can you tell I like the 270

All 270 WIN in my experience has been with either 130 or 150gr Hornady bullets and IMR 4064 powder.

Picked up some 130gr solid copper (probably SMK HPBTs?) and am going to give them a try. I even bought 100 once-fired 270 WIN brass to reprocess to give them a go using approximately 45gr of either the IMR 4064 or my other general go-to powder, IMR 4895. At an equal MV with the 130gr Hornady I wouldn't think POI should differ much at all?

Any suggestions out there would be much appreciated!

Cheers!

The 150 looked to shoot a little tighter group. One of my favorite rifles is my Browning A Bolt II IN .270. It groups 130s and 150s equally well. But definitely different points of impact. I always shot 130gr Core Lokts. They short a bit flatter at 250 yds. But if 150 grouped better I’d shoot them

Good suggestion to shoot what's most accurate as long as the bullet is suitable for whatever game you're hunting.

I like a heavy for caliber projectile. I want to make double sure that there’s an exit wound. The lightest Id go is 150.
Knowing me tho, I’d go with a 165 Accubond. And I’d shove it as fast as safely possible.

I always double check the zero on any gun after changing projectile weight.
Sometimes you get lucky. But more often than not an adjustment is necessary.

I don’t recall ever not getting an exit hole with the 130gr Core Lokts. I’ve hit them square in the shoulder and it still passed through. They let the warm air out and the cold air in.

Me too. If more oomph was needed I preferred to go to a bigger caliber.

You must be going on a Safari (or looking for some "local" really dangerous game:eek:) if the 270 WIN doesn't supply sufficient "oomph"...?

Elk, moose, black bear, etc.: all have fallen with a well-placed shot if Jack Thompson is to be properly revered...

Cheers!

P.S. Only foolin' with you: those big(ger) bore certainly do have their place in the real world!;)

My best .270 loads as recent has been a Nosler 130 accobond seated 125 off the lands with54.5 of IMR 4350

A load the has been shooting very tight for my gun ( Parker hale 1200) has been the Barnes ttsx 110 grain mono copper over reloader 16. Runs around 3160 from a 24” barrel and will shoot 1/2” at100 yards when seated 125 off the lands

My win m70 loves a 130 gr BT from 2700fps to maximum loads.

I tried the 150's early in it's life and a few in the 80's but it did not like them
and it did much better with the lighter 140 gr bullets, that will take Elk
all day long if the Nosler balistic tip, BT style bullets.

It seems to like a slow powder like 4350 or 4831 for a lot of accurate loads, near the lands.

Good shooting.

Do you mean Jack O'Connor?

As long as we’re singing the praises of the .270 this feels like a good time to bash the completely unnecessary 6.5 Creedmore
