AN INTERESTING FACTORY LETTER ON MY 3RD MODEL PERFECTED SINGLE SHOT 22
I have learned that it is important to get those old S&Ws lettered, you
just never know where they were shipped to.
I just received a letter on my Third Model S&W 22 Perfected, serial number 8326. Which I might ad, still shoots very nicely. 25 Yards off hand.
It was shipped on May 29th 1917 to Browning Brothers of Ogden Utah.
Does any one know if the Browning Brothers were a gun distributor or sporting goods store at that time?
Does any one else have any S&W that was shipped to the Browning Brothers?

I think it was a "dry goods" store, aka general store. In a town like Ogden in that time, they probably sold virtually everything but produce. Hardware, work clothes, tools, sporting goods, canned and dried foods, etc.
I think it might be covered in the bio of Browning.
I've never had an S&W shipped to them, but I had the SECOND Mod 1911 shipped to them. It was shipped in 1912 as I recall, and actually listed in Goddard's book.
I HAD to wonder if ol' John Moses' hand had held it.

Lee is correct. The Browning Bros. had a general store that sold lots of things, including guns. When we had our S&WCA annual meeting in Salt Lake City several years ago, we had a field trip to the Browning Museum and the old store in Ogden. They often added their stamp " Browning Bros. " to guns they sold. I have seen many Winchesters, etc. with that stamp, but never a S&W. Ed.

In the vernacular of a redneck...that's one nice *** I don't care who it shipped to, but going to Browning makes it even cooler.

I have a Great-Grand Uncle? (GGmothers brother) that had a hardware store about 3 doors down from the Browning Brothers shop in Ogden in the 1870's. He must have known John Moses and probably even did business with him.
Unfortunately any firearms he may have bought went down another line of the family.

I have a .32 Double Action Fourth Model revolver that was shipped to Browning Brothers, Ogden, Utah on April 28, 1900. I picked it up at a Gun Show in either Ogden or Salt Lake City about 20 years ago. I was surprised when my S&W factory letter listed this shipping destination. I think Browning Brothers operated under the name of Browning Brothers Armoury Company from about 1880 to 1926 in both Ogden and Salt Lake City Utah and was the largest sporting goods retailer in the state around 1900. Also of interest to gun leather collectors is a line of gun leather products stamped with their company logo. Alanfir.

Look at the second menu bar on top of this page and find the word "Downloads." Click on that, then on the left side of the next page look for the link for the letter request form. Click on that, print it out, fill it out, and send it in with $50.
Tell us what you find out.

I Do
That Browning Brothers Perfected is sure a nice looking gun. And with a fabulous history. I'll bet it's a great shooter.
I wish I owned it. Oh, wait. I Do. (Many thanks to Mr. Moosedog !)
Thanks for resurrecting this thread. This gun and another olympic barreled Perfected (via Mr. Mundell) are often shot at our ranch in 2 gun matches. It's one of my father's favorites. These two are especially nice to shoot with the Roper I frame target stocks (via Mr. Ejector) they currently sport. I'll post some photos someday.
This forum is a great place to make some great friends.
