I've been told that BB and CB caps should be safe in my old 1st model 3rd issue tip up. But I want to make sure and get some more assurance from you folks on the forum, and possibly anyone that has personal experience firing this ammo.

The box I picked up today I got at Walmart. It is a box of 100 rounds labeled CB .22 Short. The velocity listed on the box says 710 fps which I'm assuming is out of a rifle. Are these only loaded with a primer charge? Thanks!

the cb's have a small amount of powder.
the aguila kolibri and super kolibri are primer charge w/no powder.
i would think all of them would be safe, but i am no expert.

They should be safe, but if something goes wrong and the gun is damaged, how upset will you be?
The only 100% sure thing to keep an old gun from being damaged by being shot is to not shoot it in the first place.:p:D;)

Hi the only ones i shoot in mine are Sellier & Bellot .22 Flobert CB Caps ( 6mm ) They have a spec of powder in there case and they put 260 ft/sec and 39 ft/lbs which is all you want to put through your barrel as the cylinders in these old puppies are pretty thin. With the smokeless CCI CB'S in no time you will crack the cylinder wall then you're SOL!! These bullets are easy to find in the U.S.A. not here in Canada they run about $25 to $35 per 100 and also they make the .22 Flobert BB cap ( 6mm ) which are primer only with a round ball style bullet they run about $20/100. This little gun shoots pretty good with the CB ones lots a fun..

Somehow I just can't get excited about shooting a gun with a squib load. If I can't shoot it with the equivalent of an original load, I won't shoot it.
I suppose you could carefully pull the bullet on a .22 short, dump the powder and refill with BP, and re-seat the bullet.
However I don't think I would chance a decent 1st Model even with this. They broke in the day, they will break now.
Back in the day a broken one was replaceable, not so much now.

Twaits, Please be careful! What you describe are .22 "shorts" and are a modern cartridge. Don't shoot them in your antique! The above poster is correct in that what you can use is 6mm "flobert" type ammo. These are just a very short case with only the primer as a charge. The poster above has it correct: about 260-300 fps.

PS: CB means "conical ball" (pointed); BB means a round ball. You can get a 100rd tin, on line, for about $30. The Ammo Bank (?), I can't recall. I have a tin with about 95 rds left and intend to put it up in the classifieds, whenever.

Indeed...'.22 Short' might be a bit much.

And or, get an inertial Puller with a Holder to allow 'pulling' a .22 Short, remove the Powder, replace with Black Powder, and re-set the Bullet with appropriate dies for Belling first, Seating, then crimping.

But...

.22 BBCaps or .22 CB Caps, ought to be alright and would be just as much fun to shoot.

As far as I know, they have not changed in power/pressure, since way back when.

Thanks all for the replies. This was the info I was looking for!
Out of curiosity, does anyone know what the original velocity was out of a S&W model 1 loaded with black powder?
