Looking at some factory refinished antique S&W's I was wondering in what time frame the trademark logo on the side of the frame began to appear.
anybody have a clue?

The intertwined "SW" was trademarked by S&W on January 19, 1892. Their Declaration Statement for the application states the trademark has been "used continuously in business by us since January 29, 1878....It has been our practice to fix our trademark on our firearms by engraving or stamping the same thereon, to employ it in our illustrated catalogue of revolvers made by us, upon our different commercial papers, and to stencil or print it upon boxes or packages containing said revolvers."

Based upon the above, my guess would be the logo first appeared on their firearms after January 29, 1878 and before January 19, 1892.

trademark date

Thanks

I have several #3's dating from 1871 to 1903 and the earliest one with the logo stamped on the frame is 1897 shipped.
The next one earlier, shipped 1894, does not have the stamp.
My observation of #3's I have seen online (many), is that the logo seems to appear on fairly late production.
I don't know too much about the smaller frame models.
Hopefully someone will have more input
Regards
Mike

The Jan. 29, 1878, date is the day design drawings were filed with the US Patent Office, showing 3 designs for the logo and other S&W markings on hard rubber grips for the early .32 & .38 SAs. It did not refer to any stampings on revolvers, just on the logo designs seen in the stock circles of the guns. Ed.

As Ed states, the Gustave Young designed intertwined S&W Logo was trademarked in 1878 and appeared on hard rubber stocks around 1879.

The logo stampings on the frame changed many times and actually disappeared for awhile. I have been collecting those dates and as best I can define, here is chronology of the stamped logo.

Logos started on the Model 1896 in 1896
Large logo on right side prior to 1916
No-Logo" guns, all models 1916 to 1919
Small logo on left side started 1919 to 1936
Large logo was moved to the right side in 1937 or 1938

logo on frame

Thanks Ed and Gary.
I will consider 1896 as a good approx. date.
I had seen an otherwise unmarked factory refinished early #3 with the logo stamp and I took that to confirm the "factory" claim.
Thanks again for your research
Mike
