.22 Perfected Single Shot 3rd Model 10" Olympic Chamber (Matching)

The single shot S&W target guns are just plain neat! That one appears to have lived a very good life with an owner who took great care of it!

Maxwell

I checked the 1909-1924 roster of the USRA, there was not any Maxwell listed in the Kansas roster. I have one of the earliest "Olympic" chambered pistols [1st model of 91] by it's creator H M Pope that he did circa 1909 for R H Sayre by relining it for 22 short for indoor meets. I also own a third model #9695 with the early extra short chamber for 22lr shipped in 1921.

I have a twin brother to yours - 3rd model #9694, 10", olympic chamber. Letters as shipping 11/11/1921 to EK Tyron Co., Philadelphia, PA. Same shipment as yours ? This is one of my favorites, now wearing some wonderful Roper stocks courtesy of Mr. Jarrett.

Mine was shipped 06/24/1921 to Frank Hall Co. in Columbus, Oh., I also have a 2nd model, nickel, 8 inch barrel 22lr which is one number higher than another person I know with exact same configuration, & mine shipped nearly a yr. earlier than his.

Th OPs single shot is a beauty and he should be proud to own it and shoot it as should any model SS owner; after-all, these are "hen's teeth"!
....and just to add confusion to rct259s lengthy and confusing discourse, my own 3rd Single Shot #9843 Does Not Have an Olympic chamber.

I restored mine a couple of decades ago because I like them so much. I tightened up and timed the action, hand-polished all of the metalwork to 600grit, Steve Moeller charcoal blued it, Turnbull case colored the hammer and trigger and Michael Dubber gold inlay the barrel markings. I made a set of fancy French walnut target grips and inlaid my SDH 24kt gold hallmark in the bottom.

I love the collector grade ones of these pistols as I feel they are so historically significant to American shooting sports .That said I also love to see the ones that someone loved so much they made it their own like SDH example . I have learned many things since joining this group of enthusiasts, the nuances of the different firearms that from untrained eyes you just wouldn't see heck I hadn't even heard of an "Olympic " chamber much less ever seen or held one .You guys are a great bunch with plenty of knowledge and wisdom plus artistic ideas about firearms you make your own and I personaly love these threads .I find them enlightening and entertaining and right now reading about and looking at your firearms is very therapeutic as my insomnia is in high gear. Thanks for taking the time to share I mean this very sincerely .

In fiddling around with this one today I noticed that it is set up as single action only.

There is no record of this in the letter from Mr. Jinks, so I wonder if it was done at the factory or by a smith after the fact? My guess is it was done by a previous owner and not the factory.

Personally as a bullseye shooter I go single action so this is not an issue for me.
