New member proud of my .32 TB / help??!
Hello folks,
New to the forum here. Would like to share my heirloom S&W .32 Top break and ask for input as to its positive ID, from you who know. I suspect it may be a 2nd Model? It has a pinned (not forged) fore sight, but has not a trace of zinc plating, so I wonder if it ever had any... It's clean and in solid working condition. Not sure if I should try to fire it, but would sure like to if safe to do so. If anyone cares to help me ID and date it, and offer any other comments, I'd be most grateful. Serial # is 307XXX. This little gem has inspired me to research and step into collecting fine firearms, so, glad to be here! Thanks. Sam in Louisiana

Welcome
This top break looks to me as a .38 DA 3rd model (S&W Stand. Cat. 3rd Ed.) Im no expert! Other fine ladies and gent's on here will help you out. The ser.# you give fells into this cat. also the cylinder looks like that of a .38 DA 3rd model which measure 1.21" and the .32 DA measures.92". Which does yours measure? Also the .32 DA 1st and 2nd have the 2 sets of cylinder grooves your's doesnt. Hope this helps. This HG of yours has really nice character to the finish

That looks like a really odd barrel length on the nickel plated one. Is that factory or has it been shortened a bit?

Hi , yes you are correct , last year(08) and this year(09) i won
the Norwegian nationals with this gun.
In Norway we use cartridge revolvers in black powder competition,
and the competition name is ,Smith&Wesson ,original or replica :-) .
The catridges i use are loaded with 15grain Swiss nr.2 and
250grain RN bullet and SPG lube.

Three nice pieces, I think.
32 DA 4th, in blue. Good shooter.
M36 no dash, always good.
32 DA 4th, in nickel. Another good shooter.
If I could figure out why my computer/camera interface is fighting
me, I'd get my 32 Hammerless in here, too.

I'll try again. Someone had a nice carry piece; glad I got it.
Comparing the quality of my pics against the other pics on this forum,
there's a long, way to go for me.

Awesome thread guys and gals!
My local toy store has a top break for sale. I'm thinking it's a .32 caliber...maybe a .38 S&W. It's in pretty rough shape and he's asking $350 for it.
Is that too much?
Does anybody here carry and/or fire these old timers? Or are they just for admiration purposes only?

twaits;
Thanks for the comment, but you'll notice I didn't add any amplifying
remarks. It may look like a bicycle gun, now, but it started its career
as a standard-length barrel. What I received was a cut-down model that was restored; with a new front sight.
I enjoyed posting the pics almost as much as I do shooting it, but
I can take no credit for the work, just the pics.
I was sneakily flying false colors, but it Was fun.
I've seen some of your pics, and those from other members, and it has inspired me to start collecting in a VERY small way. Love getting
a piece of our country's history!
If I've offended anyone, I'm sorry. TACC1

Well it doesnt really matter to me how it started it's life. It's a "Bicycle Gun" now in style, and it looks GREAT. Nice work and keep on collecting!
I'm looking forward to seeing more of your guns.

1st Model Single Shot with No Recoil Shield
First Model of 91 .22 Single Shot Top Break without the recoil shield commomly found on the first model. The serial number is well above the second model which has the normal cuts in the frame and no recoil shield. Also sports the three piece target grips in Ivory and engraving.

If that gun you're looking at is pretty rough, $350 is pretty high. (although I've got a hunch that the reasonably priced ones are soon to be a thing of the past).
There are many of us who go to great lengths to safely load for and shoot these little pocket pistols. There are many more who simply shoot them with available factory ammo, and don't worry about it. I just got a box of Remington factory ammo for my 38, and it just "feels" a little hotter than what I want to run through my gun. I know that's not very scientific, but I'd rather stay on the wimpy side and enjoy my little buddies for years to come. Jim

Thanks Jim.
I was afraid it was a little high. Which is typical of this guy. He always marks his stuff up.
Is it still possible to even find .38 S&W ammo anymore?
I obviously need schooling on the old timers. I'd love to own one (or two ) but I don't have a clue as to what the different model numbers and variants are nor the associated jargon you collectors use when describing them.
All I know is that this particular revolver got me intrigued in them.
Thanks for introducing me to a new addiction Linda!

Thanks for the offer, but I doubt that I will ever get one of those beauties from yesteryear.
The pics I posted ARE NOT my revolver. Digi-shots is the owner of that gorgeous sixgun.

Here is one that I picked up a few weeks ago. It is a modern engraving job done on an old 5th model 38 Safety Hammerless (it seems to perfect to be anything else). I would sure like to find out who did the engraving. If any of you have any ideas would you let me know. Some of you may have seen this one on the S&WCA side of the forum. I hope you enjoy it, I sure do.

I've been looking at and enjoying these pictures for months now. I decided to show pics of my favorite top break. It is a 32 Safety Hammerless with factory lanyard ring. Some of you have seen it before. It is one of two known to exist today. But I now have a new holy grail gun because I have reputable information about a 2 inch 32 with factory butt swivel trading hands about 30 years ago in California. I wrote an artical about the one pictured here in the S&WCA Journal a couple of years ago. If anyone knows about the 2 incher please send me an email even if it is not for sale.

WOW!! This has to be one of the greatest threads I have ever seen on the S&W forum. This one has been better than a stroll through a museum. Thank you all for sharing the wonderful pictures of your oldtimers.
Makes me wish I had one!
Thanks again.

My one and only antique Smith.
A .32 Safety Hammerless, first model. Nowhere near the condition of many in this thread, it is, never-the-less, a fascinating little handgun.

Congratulations on your National Championship. That is impressive, glad to see the old guns are still shooting and winning.

.38 Single Action 2nd Model; 3-1/4" barrel - S/N 1463
S&W 38 Single Action 2nd Model S/N 1463
It's in rough shape but it still shoots!
.38 Double Action 5th Model; 4" barrel; w/factory pearl medallion grips - S/N 540809
S&W 38 Double Action 5th Model
Appears to have been used very little.
.38 Safety Hammerless 5th Model; 4" barrel - S/N 242671
LEMON SQUEEZER - .38 Safety Hammerless 5th Model
This gun appears to have not been used much.
