5 screw M & P with grips added-new pics
I went through and cleanup up my 4-inch 5 screw M & P. I now have the correct thumbpiece thanks to Sebago Son, and the grips are on the way. (I put the nice gold medallion grips that came with this gun on my .32-20 M & P for a more vintage look). Shoots very nice, has one of the nicest triggers. Don't have a letter but according to the S & W Catalog the serial prefix is post 1946, and they changed the front sight to the slight ramp in 1952.

Thanks for posting the pic, I always like looking at a no nonsense M&P.
But your comment about the front sight has got me thinking. I have a 4 screw 2" M&P which obviously was made after 1952 but still has the half moon front sight. Was this one of those cases where something was changed during production but not really followed to the letter?

I've got a 2" M&P that was built in 1958 and believe it or not, It has the round front sight! I guess we have a couple of oddballs from S&W. I love the old M&P's.

I have a 1953 vintage 4 inch M&P and it also has the half moon front sight. As with other changes, Smith & Wesson used up the parts on hand and changes did not occur at one exact date.

I put these grips that I got from forum member rfo1 on yesterday. I'm not sure but these grips look like either old Jordan's or Roper's. Either way they fit great and they have a nice feel, they fit right to my hand.

Those big grips just don't look right with the thin barrel. I put some targets on my Thunder Ranch but the look was all wrong.
If they work for you that's all that matters.

That's a great looking gun David. I'm glad I was able to help with the grips.

No, not Jordan's. Those have a filler behind the backstrap, because Bill Jordan had huge hands. Skeeter Skelton wrote that in Bill's hand, a quarter looked like a dime in most men's hands. His article had a picture as well, showing those big mitts.
Joni Lynn has cornered the market on Jordan grips, I believe.
