Boston Police Guns looking for a list

I am attempting to start a collection of Boston Police guns, either marked or lettered to BPD.

Has anyone every created a list of the handguns that the Boston Police used in the 100 plus years? I am looking for Smiths but also Colts and anything else they may have used.

I don't have a list but I know they had some Colt Banker's Specials in .38 New Police issued to detectives back in the day.

Sig 1911s for SWAT issue, replaced as needed with S&W 1911s.

Also, Colt New Services in .38 Spl were reported as BPD issue in "The Book of Colt Firearms Third Edition" by R.L. Wilson. Nickle finish seems to have be used in early Colts as well as the top-break S&Ws. All revolvers seemed to be BPD marked, with the exception of some of the Model 649s and maybe the Model 60s. Other handguns may have been issued that I've never seen or heard of, Undercover guns, etc.

Long guns,

Bolt Action (Krags, 1917s or Springfield 03s) from the WW1 and post-WW1 period, Red Scare, etc., WW2 Civil Defense.
Maxim machine gun (or a Colt-it's seen in older photos from the Police Strike).
Thompson Submachineguns, legend in the dept, it's believed 6 were in stock.
M-1 carbines (back in the 60s during the riots, unk if issued or taken from Gov't stocks).
Winchester Model 12
Remington 870s, full and folding metal stocks.
Smith and Wesson 3000 riot gun
Ruger Mini-14s (select auto AC556s).
Colt M16A1
Colt M4s, 2 per district and carried in gun cars, small number of Bushmaster M4gerys and S&W M&P15s for SWAT Team and Range staff.
Benelli semi-auto shotguns in 12 gauge for SWAT.
Unk bolt action rifle in .308 for SWAT.
200 surplus USAF M16s (converted to semi-auto only) in locked metal containers somewhere.

The gun in question is the cornerstone of my collection, the first BPD gun I got (every journey starts with a single step!) I still can't believe how lucky I was with that!

Now I will have something more to look for than a US Navy Victory (sideplate marked), of course I will still be buying other Smith's, I have the disease!

I would be great once they get all the factory records from Smith on-line to be able to search by who they were delivered to, you could search for any gun sent to BPD!

My two BPD guns

Ruger Speed Six, chambered in .38 Special, marked BPD. This gun was produced in 1988, the last year of Ruger Six production.

VERY NICE !

Picked up two of the BPD Ruger Speed Sixes in 4" SS (. 38 Spl.) back in the late 80s. Still have one that is VERY tight and well made, about the best I have ever seen. It wears a set of custom round butt Spegels.

Always wondered what "BPD" was and only figured it out about a year ago.

We still have some Ruger Speed Sixes at our range for civilians to take a LTC test with.

I just an very interesting BPD S&W Model 10, I got it from a guy who got it directly from the Officer who carried it! The Officer wrote a letter documenting his career with the Boston Police as well as the use of the gun.
He documents using it in an armed confrontation where he states "I fired twice and the man went down"
It is really worn on the right grip and shows 25 years of holster wear, he got it new in 1961 from BPD and carried until he retired in 1985. My guess is that he used to rest his hand on the gun in the holster (I do that!). The grips number to the gun.
I traded a WWII Remington Rand 1911A1 for it and a Springfield Civil War Musket and a Police Inspector badge. I was tempted to just trade straight up, I wanted it that bad, but held out.

Jeff, congrats on adding another one and that's a great history to go along with it. That should go well with the pair you have. We need to see a group shot as well.

I had a Boston PD marked Smith and Wesson 3000 riot gun with a wood butt stock and synthetic forearm. It had a brass shield tacked on the bottom of the pistol grip with the Boston police mark.

I just got the ship date on the new gun, M&P Pre-10 Dec 1953.

This is one of the interesting things about collecting identified guns, the condition is less important than the condition of the gun (to my mind anyway)

All three of the siblings show considerable wear, in the case of the latest one (1953) 32 years of holster wear.

Those just look like they belong together. Very nice.

I agree with the luck part, I was calling the guy about a .22 he had for sale and in chit chatting it came out that he had this BPD gun that he really didn't want to get rid of, I guess I found the right trade (a 1911 WWII).

A QUESTION: on the S&W Model 10's and the Ruger Single 6 and the more modern guns, did BPD roll mark or do any kind of BPD Marking on the guns?

added a big brother to my BPD collection! I was at the Wilminton show this weekend handing out my new postcards advertising that I am buying Boston Police marked guns (not just Smiths - heavens) and someone overheard me and approached me saying he had a Smith Model 64 that he would be willing to sell. He got it from a dealer many years ago who got a whole bunch of unissued .38's from BPD, in fact he said he had the choice of consecutive numbers and picked B.P.D. 13 ( I wish he had bought 2 or 3 sequential numbers!) it had the original box and cleaning rod and brush. The rod and brush are still in an unopened bag and the warrantee card is there un-filled in. The gun is frame marked B.P.D. 13 He said the dealer said it was never fired but I think it was test fired at the factory as when I cleaned above the forcing cone there was a hint of soot.

I have a question, I am including a picture of the sticker on the original box, what do all the markings mean, some are obvious, some I am not sure about. Also on the sticker in the bottom left corner is the number 13 which is the number on the gun. Under Special Features it says "L270" what is that?
