Walked away from a 38 Regulation Police today
The action was tight, the bore was good and screws looked unmolested but that is all it had going for it. The front sight had been nicely converted to a thinner target style sight. Re-blue over some light pitting and wrong grips completed the decent from nice condition to basic shooter. I thought the $250 price was a little optimistic and the dealer thought my $200 offer too weak.

Just keep walking - no one needs a $200 shooter.

Picked up a .38 Regulation Police Sunday
Hope it's ok to post this here
S# 16282 ,blue, very tight like new, grips about perfect numbered to gun,
barrel and extractor rod bluing 98%, frame has old surface rust and light pitting both sides, trigger and hammer have old surface rust
gun has not been cleaned up no scratches, no oil in stock
bore and chambers look good, a few light spots.
about when was it made?
was 300.00 to much?
Thanks
Cary

Cary, if the "light surface rust" goes away with cleaning and if the finish is really 98%, that price sounds OK to me -- though some would say it is at the high end of the proper range.
That serial number probably puts the gun in the early 1920s.

While I do not mind negotiating I thought my offer of $200 was more than generous. In retrospect rather than regretting letting that pistol slip away I might have regretted if I had been taken up on my offer. HOWEVER, I like 38 S&W. I usually carry an I or J frame as a field gun when hiking. The front sight was modified by someone who had a clear idea what they felt a front sight should look like, and knew how to achieve that in metal. If it had the original grips in good condition I might have gone back and talked some more. This revolver though had too many strikes against it even for me.
