Please tell me about Pre 10 snubbies
Looks like they can be had in good condition for $350.
Reliable enough for a carry gun? (If I ever live in or visit a free state)
Strong enough for moderate use at the range?
Seems to be a very classic and fun revolver.

I may be all wrong, but around here I would be surprised if not shocked to find a genuine 2" M&P in decent condition for $350. What I would find for that price, even less, is one of the Lend-Lease Victory Models, cut down and rechambered from .38 S&W to .38 Spec in England before being reimported to the US -- and I am not interested in owning one of those at all.

Mine cost quite a bit more than $350, but I like it! S series serial number, 25 yard target.

Absolutely reliable, just a little too heavy for me. IMHO these are great guns, very accurate and something I carried as my issued weapon during my LEO days. Now that I'm retired I rely on lightweight J Frames but again you cannot go wrong w/a 2" M10.

I too have seen them offered as low as $350, and I think that's a good price. I paid a premium for this one last year -- S prefix, shipped January 1947, about 98% condition. A classic. I love taking it to the range, and I would have no qualms relying on this as a carry piece.
I need to work on that grip adapter, make it fit a little better.

RUN AWAY....
These are very dangerous guns. Stay AWAY from them at all cost.Once you buy/shoot one it will be almost impossible not to get another one if one becomes available. You will be OK if you can keep your number of them to 3 or less, after that you are just lost forever.ALSO, they may be linked to the desire to get other 5 screw M&P's in other barrel lengths. It's a slippery slope that's best avoided. I'm telling you this for your own good,I know what happens, I've been there....

Just one more won't hurt me.
It's so cute.
How could that be a problem.
My wife just doesn't understand.
I can stop any time I want.
I am not addicted.
I do have other interests.
I am not sick.
I am not in denial.
Look I only got two 27's (so far )

They are excellent revolvers and around here you would be hard pressed to find a snub nosed Model 10 in excellent condition for less less the $400.

One of my favorites! I would never part with my 1947 snub. It's been awhile since I've seen one for sale in my neck of the woods. Plus a $350 price tag would be Christmas in April. $450 to $550 easy.

While I picked up this 5 screw snub serial near C 350,000 for $350 I fealt it was priced low.
Probably can find a 3 screw snub in that range but the K frame snub is a heavy gun when compared to the J airweights.
If you really like the 6 shot K 38 snub dont forget the K frame Model 12 airweight (Below left)
Roundbutt configuration is probably better for concealed carrying.
If you desire Magnum Force the 2.5" Model 66 / 19 in 357 magnum is just a little heavier in a similar size frame...

Here's a careful single-action group fired from 19 yards with this 2-inch M&P serial number 304XXX. The 2-inch M&P is still a sensible choice.
Below is a deliberate double-action group.

As much as I enjoy shooting the snubby-K, I get the real pleasure from the Dick Tracy association and have much better guns for carry or accuracy...
If I find another I can afford I will probably buy it and give it to my brother who doesn't quite get it, but surely will if he has one...
Still looking for the perfect holster, I think a Brauer or Bucheimer clamshell? I'll let you know...

This one left the factory in 1948*, asking price was $400.00 ( west Michigan gun shop) with incorrect grips. I got it as part of a trade so there was no cash outlay. I picked up these grips at a gun show:
.
I wouldn't hesitate to carry it.
Hoppe's No.10
* Michigan highway map, also 1948

I bought an "S" prefix (shipped 1946) M&P/pre- 10 snubbie in excellent condition for $425 about two months ago. It came with "incorrect" post-1968 grips, and for an additional $30 and help from members of this forum, I added correct Diamond Magnas from close to the shipping date.

There is one right now on that site that starts with a G, and they are asking 425 (buying it right now). Seems like a good deal to me, based on what people here are saying.

Bushmaster: Combat said it all. I've got five 5-screws and still looking.
Last month I saw a somewhat rough appearing one in good mechanical shape with original grips for $250. Otherwise $300 to $350 seems to be about right.

My pre-model 10 snubby is a 4-screw, C 381,xxx. I bought it quite a few years ago for $150, but that was back then. It's still in excellent condition.

Hi Thuer,
May we have an image showing the other side also?
Is this a 'one line' Text on lower right side Frame? Or..?
I like the plain Stocks on it. Were those something you did, or, were they on it when you got it?

Got this one at the Poulin Auction in March 2010. I had to buy the Taurus as well to get the Smith. After selling the Taurus for $200 I've got $350 in the M&P. And it's a Detroit police gun from 1948
This is it cleaned up with a set of pearls I had:

I likes the looks of this round butt model with grips that are pre-war shape but exhibit post-war checkering style.
Here is a photo of the above gun with another one that has more of a pre-war checkering style. The are both 1950's guns as I recall and the grips do number to the guns.

Hi hsguy,
Interesting observation and comparison on the two different Round-Top Round Butt Stock patterns.
Do any of us have any nfo on when the Round-Top Round Butt Stocks ceased to be an option for the M&Ps?
The layout of the later style Stocks looks like it could be readily adapted to the 'Plain Clothes' type, or followed the same manner of a higher non-checlered area at the base anyway.

Funny...this old beater was with me today at the deer lease.
Rides in my back left pocket. Even cranked a few rounds thru it.
Seems I picked this package up at around $400.00.IIRC..
Sweet shooter.

Hi Oyeboteb. This revolver is dicussed a long time ago. The grips are probebly sand down original grips.
It is an original S&W pre model 10. Only a couple of former owners decide to shop off a part off the frontsight. It is reblued. And the the former owner didnt have a clue what kind of revolver it was. He tought that it was an model 36. When I bought it from him (It is a 86 year old man) I did give him more money he ask for. This becouse it is a friend of mine and I didnt wat to take advance of him.
I realy love this revolver. It is practical and a very good shooter.
