Howdy,

I came across two of these stocks a few years ago for a steal at a gun store. I let my buddy (reluctantly) have one set and I kept the other.

I am 99% certain these are Gagen (sp?) carved Walter Roper grips. I have read probably every thread on them and they have all the characteristics.

The square jig holes, the carving and it looks like the date might have been '36, it's really hard to tell with my eyes these days. But you can clearly see in each one that they say S&W 38.

The only down side is they have small chips out of the rear top but they are hardly noticeable. I fitted them to a Victory model and they fit perfectly.

At first I thought they were a little rough but after reading more about them it seems that is one of the ways you can tell.

Regardless, I thought I would seek the opinion of the folks on this forum.

Thanks.

You have your verdict, and I am in complete agreement with Kevin. That is an excellent set of classic Ropers. Congratulations.

The artist's name was Mathias Gagne, which I presume was pronounced gon-YAY. There is some disagreement about the way he spelled his first name, with different sources offering different versions.

Thanks! I wouldn't even have know to buy them in the first place if it wasn't for this forum and the wealth of knowledge on it. Just cruising around reading random threads has really been of benefit.

It was the same, but no chips. He was giving a gift to a lady friend an old hand ejector from 1921 and it needed stocks in the worst way.

Ahh! Young romance!
