Why so few 5" five screws?
Was a 5" barrel not popular?

Pre-war heavy duties are almost exclusively 5 inchers. I think it is the perfect Nframe barrel length (I have a lead on another 5" 27-2, and will report out if the deal happens).

Quite a few 5" pre-27s have shown up around these parts...1954 came with 5" Lawrence holster
5" M&P 1916
1932 5" M&P
1946 .44HE. 5"
HD from 1955, 5"
There were certain models in specific time eras when 5" barrels were almost abundant.

The majority of 38SW Victory models sent to the Allies during WW2 were 5" guns.

The last...or maybe the second last...of the Non-registered Magnums was a 5 incher.
And here she is with some nice Cokes.
Penultimate Pre Postwar Magnum is in Mexico!

Cap'n,
This one once belonged to a West Texas Lawman who I knew pretty well.
The 5" was his "Walking Around Gun"...
... a 3 1/2" was his "Sitting Around Gun".... Both were fitted with Rosewood Cokes.
He's go on to his reward now, but his shooter still soldiers on in the hands of a young fella of whom I am very fond...

Yup, we gotta keep the boys outfitted....Jest livin to see 'em grown and making something of themselves is reward enough.
I've got two boys already grown and 4 grandsons a coming on.
I might jest have enough 5" S&Ws to go around...If not, I'll jest build one or two more, so's they's can at least have one or two apiece.
Su Amigo,
Dave

Funny you should say that Dave... I got two boys and gave them both 5" 27's. DJ shoots the knockers off his. Ryan keeps his in it's presentation case. He's more of a Colt man.
Ryan with an Officer's Model Match.
Ryan is also about to give me a Grandson so I've gotta be shoppin' round...

I will be joining your venerable club soon with my first S&W. A 27-2 5 inch barrel in pristine condition. No safe queens in my home so she'll be accompanying me to many a dusty range and smoky room.
Can't wait.

Uh, guys, remember that the OP is not about any 5", but 5 screw 5". Well, someone has to keep order around here...
My take on it is very simple. Back in the distant past when still making 5 screws, S&W standardized its barrel lengths, and the 5" lost out.

Well, phooey. But if the 5" lost out whilst they were still doing five screw revolvers, then my four screw 5" 27 no dash must feel like a real loser...

Holsters for five-inch barrels have usually been hard to buy from major makers. That affected buyers, I think.
Cops standardized on four and six-inch barrels and that affected the holster business, as few civilians carried openly.
Among cops, Detroit and the RCMP used five-inch M&P's. One big security agency, Wackenhut, issued them, most in nickel, I think. I believe the Detroit guns were also in nickle.
I do like the five-inch (and three-inch!) guns. But I have to say that I shot my six-inch M27s quite a bit better than a late M-27 in five-inch. I have never had much interest in the 3.5-inch barrel .357's. It amazed me that S&W didn't make the four-inch barrel standard in the M-27.

The 5" M&P's are fairly common, here's one from around 1951...
The double action trigger pull is extremely slick and smooth.

They did, towards the end of the M27's run.

I asked Roy Jinks the question about post war Pre-Model 10 M&P barrel lengths and which where the most and least produced. His response was in this order:
4"
2"
5"
6"
This is only for the M&P's. I am sure N frames are even fewer.

It would be a safe bet that the N Frame barrel-length "most to least" order would be different too.
