What does a Pre-Model 24 box look like?

Hello all,

I have a couple of pre-model 24 "Target Model of 1950" revolvers in need of boxes. These boxes must be scarcer than hen's teeth, as I've never seen one. I'm assuming that they're some variation of a gold box, but it would be nice to know what I'm hunting for.

If you have one and can post a photo, I'd appreciate it.

Speaking of which, having a thread showing the representative boxes for each hand ejector style would make for a great sticky.

Best wishes,

David

It could be a gold 1926 Target box with a white label glued on top and on the end.
It could also be the early blue (blue-black) box with a white label on the end naming the model. The serial number would be on the bottom in white grease pencil.

Hi David:

Here you go. This is not my gun but I think it is what you are looking for.

Lee & Charlie,

Thank you very much for your replies. I've never seen the blue-black model you're referring to, but I just looked it up in the SCSW so I have a good idea of what they look like.

So the box is labelled "1926 Model Target Revolver" - good to know. I've seen a 1926 gold box before, but not one for a target model.

Now I know what I'm hunting for. Thank you very much for enlightening me!

Frequently you'll see a 1950 pre 24 in a 1926 box that has an overlay sticker on it like this one in the picture.

Thanks! This is actually something I have seen. I would imagine this would be more common on the early pre-24's.

Thank you for the photos!

Edit: I spoke too soon. I've seen that sticker on a standard 1926 box, but not a target model box. I wonder why they'd put that sticker on a box that is already marked "Target"?

They can also be in a maroon box. I believe the maroon box guns are primarily in the S100XXX to S108XXX. If it shipped with target stocks, it could be in a larger maroon box that is 5.5 in wide and a little over 15" long. I've only seen 1 of the large maroon boxes and I own it with the gun inside. I also have an early 1950 in the S97XXX range that's in a gold box that I believe is original that doesn't have the 1950 overlay sticker. The believe the blue-black boxes started with the pre-Model 25 in about 1955.

Thank you for posting this. I hadn't considered the possibility of maroon boxes (which I think are really pretty). I'll have to look up the serial numbers of the two pre-24's I'm hoping to find boxes for and see if either falls into the range you've specified.

Thanks!

Hello David
Because S&W does not waste anything that they can put to good use. They must have had a bunch of Model of 1926 revolver boxes left over so it was far cheaper to place an over box sticker on them, then to reproduce a whole new series of Boxes...Here is a Transitional Model {See the larger extractor Knob end} In full target form with the over ride sticker in place...

Last I knew George Wimmer had a few of these for sale. He was running them on Gunbroker but that was some time back. I'm sure you're looking at the $300 plus, price range if he has more.

Hi Kurt,

I sure wish I lived closer to Tennessee, as I would love to see your collection. Each photo you post looks nicer than the last. That is a stunning pre-Model 24 you have there.

I assumed that S&W would have created a box for this model, with the name "Target Model of 1950". As you stated, S&W must have had a lot of the older boxes.

Thank you for your input and photo!

I saw those listed, but thought they were for an older model, like a 3rd Model Hand Ejector. I can't afford $300 at the moment with the missus receiving chemotherapy, but hopefully I'll stumble across a deal at some point down the road.

Thank you for the post. I appreciate the lead!

Hammerdown - Does that appear to be the original box? Is it numbered on the bottom? Most of the very early guns that I have seen are in 1926 boxes without the overlay sticker. However, they may not be original.
