I just acquired a pre 27 5 screw 8 3/8 serial # S 107940

Any idea on how old it is?

THanks!

Looks to have been shipped in 1954, so 58 years old. Hope this is helpful.

Here is the pictures. I have two sets of grips. For its age the blueing is amazing. I don't think its been shot alot. The action is very tight. What's it worth?

I would say high three figures; right now the long barrels are going for much less than the 5 and 3.5". This one is interesting for having a Baughman or ramp front sight, rather than the Patridge or squared rear face type. Interested to see what others think about this feature.

Could either pairs of the grips be original to the gun?

The ramp sight is interesting, and I don't see evidence of a pin removal and reinsertion in the sight base. That makes me think the gun was special ordered with a ramp front sight.

I agree that the longnose Pre-27s don't have the same enthusiastic market as some of the short tube varieties, but the guys who like them tend to like them a lot. Furthermore, there don't seem to be that many around; as a market principle, it doesn't matter if other barrel lengths are more popular if there aren't enough long barrels to fill up demand. I'd think a decent 8-3/8" Pre-27 like this one could go for a thousand or more. Some NIB or ANIB long-tube Pre-27s with original box and tools have gone for almost $2000 in recent years.

But the only way to find out for sure is to sell it, starting insanely high and then coming down to the point where someone finally says OK.

Not a fan of the long barreled guns but that one could change my mind

Which of the diamond grips did the pre 27 come with? I have both sizes.

You just bought it and you're asking what it's worth?

Should have come with the smaller "Magna" style. Those will have the serial stamped on one side.

Look for a stamped number on the inside of the smaller (Magna) stocks, probably the right panel. If it matches the SN they are the originals. Target stocks may have been original (rarely) but were almost never numbered to the gun.

The smaller grips do not match the pistol so I assume the target grips are the originals. Is is rare to have a pre-27 with target grips?

See post #14, above. You can confirm how the gun shipped with a factory letter:

Firearm History Request - Smith & Wesson

It will likely tell you it shipped with the Magna stocks.
